Richard Thompson is the greatest strat player that has ever lived

some good names so far but I think we all know who owns the strat or at least redefined it

I can appreciate Mayer, but not sure what you mean by him redefining the Strat. In order to redefine something, your new definition would have to go into common usage by other Strat players. Listening to the first few seconds of your clip I say he's still playing the definition put forth by Hendrix. I'm not hearing anything significantly new there and can't think of any body of guitarists influenced by Mayer.

Best use of a Strat in recorded music history. Jimmy Page finds the whammy bar. A glorious day. Like many Zep songs it sounds authentic Delta voodoo blues at the same time as something completely modern with no precedent.

John Mayer is an archetypal Strat player all packaged up for soccer moms, impressionable teenage kids learning to play guitar, and older players who think that Scott Henderson plays "a lot of wrong notes".

Richard Thompson is an archetypal Strat player all packaged up for literary snobs, people who like to hang out in 19th century smoking jackets, and folks who think that Yngwie Malmsteen plays "too many notes".

:wink::grin:

Smoking jackets? Wtf?

Get a dressing gown like an adult.

Duane Allman, Freddie King, Albert King, BB King, Billy Gibbons, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Randy Roads...

... definitely not everyone's favorite, but they all have pretty distinct sounds, right?

Jimmy is a bit different, in that many of the songs people associate with his '59 LP were actually recorded with the Brown Bomber tele.
Gibbons too, since he EQ's everything he plays to sound like his Pearly Gates LP.

Agree that Jimmy should have used the Strat more.
The difference in their version of the blues is the groove Bonzo lays down.

It could be argued that John Frusciante does the Hendrix thing better than Hendrix ...John Kinda owns the strat

And why can't Fender make a Richard Thompson sig Strat? He's certainly an artist more than worthy of one.
