Radiohead is erased from the internet

It blows my mind how people - specifically musicians - find them boring.

I mean, it doesn't surprise me, in a way. In the same way that the fact that high school reading lists have become less demanding/challenging is unsurprising.

I really enjoy a wide variety of music. ELP. Dixie Dregs. Roy Buchanan. Zappa. Social Distortion. Treat Her Right. David Bromberg. Leo Kottke. John Tesh (hate him..). I just personally find Radiohead (for the most part) to be kinda bland. Not unlike Muse. The highlighted song had nothing that made me think "WOW!" what a great lyric/chorus/change/swell etc. JMTC.

I suspect that the influence of mass media and the popularity of commercial genre entertainment (which has produced some great stuff) has eroded the general appetite for/patience with subtlety. When people are selling you things, they give you what you want. Sales on a massive worldwide scale result in a lot of people pleasing and immediacy in popular entertainment (for example the Disney owned franchise films that everyone loves). Which makes stuff that takes time/audience investment seem boring or slow or willfully obscure.

As a well known Radiohead fanatic I don't think they're boring at all, but I disagree with the above in the sense that I can definitely see why other people would. So it doesn't surprise me that they do.

As a musician, I dig some of Radiohead's stuff, but some of it I do find very bland and boring. In the "Witches" tune, I thought the textures used (the mixtures of interesting string scoring with the analog synth bass) were very interesting, but the song as a composition was very dull and forgettable. However, the second tune, I thought the opposite. As a composition, there were a lot of cool, novel harmonic things going on with a much stronger melody, although the textures were more conventional.

Basically I see them as a band that's great when they're on, but kind of boring when they're not. What annoys me, though, are the fans that act as if every sound uttered by the band is pure genius that cannot be questioned, and if you do, it's because you're a pleb who can't grasp it. They do, in fact, have some genius songs (many more than most bands), but not everything is a winner.

One thing Radiohead does better than any other band is that they can shapeshift and time travel....note the release date of the new album is two days into the future cop0

I'm glad Radiohead is out there doing what they do and that so many people are into it. Most people I know really like Radiohead. I've sat there for an hour + more than 5 times doing the "let me just show you a couple things I bet you've never heard." The common thing people always say is you have to listen to it a lot to really appreciate it. I'd rather not spend the time and energy when there is so much else out there for me to enjoy.

I much prefer dynamic music made by people playing "instruments." I know synths and computers are instruments and didn't mean that statement to be
inflammatory. For me it feels mechanical and soulless like Steve Vai or Yngview without being so fast. The most interesting aspect, and what's always pointed out, is the layers of and textures. I think less of them would do more for me. Maybe I'm simple, but it just kind of always comes across as a wash of sound to me.

Radiohead:

Coldplay for Hipsters.

Much respect for the early stuff. Nothing they've done in this Millennium is of any consequence in my world. Thom tries too hard to be brilliant. The early brilliance was organic and spontaneous. Continuing to adhere to some mythical art - rock ethos just for the sake of trying to define yourself is when creativity dies and is replaced by boring, disingenuous fluff. They need to get over themselves.

I never got the Coldplay comparison.

As for very popular bands Coldplay always seemed more like a much less rockin later era U2 than anything Radioheadish.

Yup, I also think Mumford and Sons is very U2ish in their wall of sound approach to folk music.

Mumford and Sons latest album has some obvious '80s prit-pop influences and at times in reminiscent of Coldplay (first two albums) who not entirely un-U2ish.:thu:

The Mumford and Sons album is much better than anything Coldplay have released in years, but I hate making the comparison because of how much so many people seem to hate Coldplay. I think their first albums were brilliant and then things started wavering and they've never recovered. Mumford and Sons are still exploring sounds in a way that I appreciate.

If you haven't checked out Hoots and Hellmouth, they do the stompy folk thing pretty well.

Liking this record significantly more now than I did back when this thread was spinning. That's a compliment; most things wear thin.

Radiohead are ok but I can't forgive Thom Yorke for having a weird creepy eye.

Bloody freak.
