Played my first round of golf today

My round at Torrey was a mess. I kept topping my irons, and my tee shots were awful. Time to take a break from golf for a bit.

played 9 today.
1 double bog
4 Bog's
3 Par's
1 Birdie
= 41

first drive i mishit and went short and right.
the rest of the drives were pretty straight and out past 240. a couple were getting close to 260.
on the 4th hole, a 268 yard par 4, i drove it to about 8 FEET short of the green, on the false front.
duffed a 5 iron that would have been on the green on, which caused the last bogey

:100:

woohoo got to 40 today.
1 double
2 bogies
all the rest were pars.
on the par 5 8th, i fucked up the approach shot by using a club too short and left it on the false front.
then fucked up some more, thinking i could putt up close to the hole, 30+ feet uphill. nope.
ended up with three putts for bogey. had i either used a longer club for the approach or did a bump and run from the false front, i would have made par on that one also, scoring a 39

a big reason for my better scoring is getting my driver under control.
hitting it pretty straight and getting out there close to 250 and even more sometimes.
if you fuck up the drive, you're playing catch-up for the rest of the hole.

how do you like them??

how do they compare to the last set ??

golf digest said they are very forgiving with respect to centered hits and the launch pretty good but still get good distance.

I've had mine for about 2 years. I got them after getting fitted. Prior to owning these, I was borrowing a set from a friend. Compared to those, these were a big improvement.

My swing is still very inconsistent, but when I get a good strike it feels so awesome, and the ball really carries without much effort.

I have to admit that I don't slice too much when I hit these, in fact I seem to get more of a draw with them. I've been getting along very nicely with my PW, and I tend to get more shots online with that club. I struggle with my 6 iron, but I think I just need more practice on the range with it.

For now I'm out of commission as far as golf goes. Last week I injured my right hand while playing with my dad at Torrey Pines. I hit my drive into the rough on 14 and I was going to punch out with my 5H, but when I did somehow the club dug into the ground or hit something because it just stopped as I was giving it a full swing. As a result I severely sprained my right thumb. I couldn't even finish the round because I no longer could swing a club. I went to the doctor and got it checked to make sure nothing was broken, and thankfully it was only a bad sprain.

mojo
i did something similar years ago and sprained my wrist.
i was out for the rest of the season.

i played a few weeks ago. the course was sooooo wet that every time i tried to get an iron under the ball, it just dug mud and punted the ball 50 feet

i'm going to play sunday, so we'll see how that goes.

The last round I played I didn't even finish because I mishit a ball, and it pulled way left of where I was aiming. Unfortunately a 16 year old kid who was playing in my foursome was there, and the ball hit him right on the lip causing a nasty cut that needed stitches. I went to the ER and his parents were there and VERY angry, threatening to sue me over this. I felt absolutely terrible about it, and I haven't swung a golf club since then.

mojo. but you should still get out there, maybe by yourself for a while to get a little consistency going.
also sounds like the kids parents are a-holes.

Damn, what a nightmare. Sorry to hear this.

I hope the parents realized it was a random thing when they cooled off, and don’t pursue any legal harassment of you over it.

How do we feel about the #1 golfer in the world getting taken down like a 'fall guy' and arrested before the 1st hole of the second round at the PGA Championship? He had a slight misunderstanding with a traffic cop. Pretty wild.

A caller on The Dan Patrick Show said Scottie Scheffler got a jailbirdie before the first hole. He made his tee time and is in contention.

Crazy stuff. I’m not sure I have the reliable facts yet - a cop was somehow injured in the incident? Hopefully all a misunderstanding from the confusion surrounding the traffic accident, as Scheffler’s people are claiming.

I used to play ball golf. Started around 12-13 with my dad's hand me downs. Irony is that I still have the irons but have replaced the woods a few times. I had to leave the game at the age of 33 (30 years ago) because I received a partially torn ACL playing bball against a clumsy 6'4" dude. Had a step and half on him and he swept my leg. This is my pivot leg. I have gone out a few times but the rotation and cost of the game made me leave it permanently.

My substitute was taking up Disc Golf (Frolf, Frisbee Golf as called by others) in 2021. Same game but utilizing discs (smaller than Frisbees) and much more fun IMO. Outside of the cost for discs, no green fees (except at private courses), the game is faster and you are walking with a purpose. What I also love is enjoying the scenery of the courses I have played and some that I yet to play but seen in pictures. The other thing is over 90% of the people on the courses are cool. Not stuffy snobby shitheads with attitudes. I despised it when a ball golf course required you to ride a cart instead of walking, that's not exercise.

I'm going to lean and polish my Callaway Big Bertha Irons and Drivers and sell them. Haven't swung a club in a couple years and any desire to get "fresh air and exercise" leads to Disc Golf not Ball Golf.

My clubs are too old to sell unless I do it as a garage sale. Went to a golf club store to see if they could sell my Wilson Persimmon Woods, the lady chuckled. It's all about metal drivers now and my metal drivers are older Taylor Made. Probably only my Ping Anser 5 putter is worth anything.
