The RS article makes interesting points that I considered and alluded to when I posted last above. Still, I voted with my conscience. With AZ falling for Clinton, the math gets increasingly hard for Bernie. But I believe Bernie has already had a positive effect on the election cycle, causing Clinton to either modify or clean up her stance on some things. I would love to see a complete changing of the guard and Bernie take all. And I did what I could to support that.
Blaine County is a little mountain micro-climate (social climate I mean) that in some ways resembles the larger West Coast social climate, but much smaller and compressed, so easier to see things. It is full of transplants from the liberal cities of the west, some from places like Boston and New York, and mountain dirt hippies. The folks on the Bernie side of the gym last night were largely much younger, though there were quite a few older folks (myself included) as well. On the other side, you saw mostly boomers. The difference to me was also temperament. (broad generalizations and labels follow next.
) Those on the Hillary side looked mostly like the folks you might see manning the phones at the annual local PBS telethon. People that prefer Carole King and James Taylor People that dive Subaru foresters, and hike, the cross country skiers in the community.
On the Bernie side, you had the young, the more flamboyant, the more artistic, the younger local musicians, the skaters and snowboarders, those that prefer new grass or punk/alt. Also, the vibe was quite different. The Bernie side was louder and more excited. (see guy on the far right of pano shot above) The Hillary side looked slightly nervous and offended by any chanting or cheering.
My wife sat on the Hillary side (though she said she would be happy with either candidate). I asked her what she made of it. She said the Hillary side was "older and quieter."
Blaine County is not a large place. Less than 20,000 all told, and under 800 at this caucus. So not a statistically significant population. But I just thought it was fun and interesting to observe how this fell out in this little mountain community.
