new kitchen jam: gas v induction (plus anything else we should be thinking about?)

All's I know is that our building is 100% electric and our insurance rates are way lower than neighboring buildings - and I'll put my cooking and baking up against any of you fuckers.

I could be wrong but I don't think they ask what your hob is running on when you get an insurance quote here.

Might ask about GCH which most folk will have but nothing kitchen specific.

Anyway the guy did a design based on our dream aspiration for layout (internal wall taken out and back door removed) which I absolutely love, I just hope we can make it a reality.

Mrs JBJ is happy the sink is going where she wants and the oven will be wall mounted. I'm just glad it's somewhere that will feel good to cook in.

Dude is coming out tomorrow to see if we can rip this wall out.

He said even if it's load bearing it can come out but there's added implications (and costs) regarding planning, selling the place in future etc...

We have an appointment to go and choose the finish on Tuesday. It's getting very real all of a sudden.

Dreading the upheaval it's going to create but it'll be worth it. We recently bought a ninja combi oven so we'll still be able to cook reasonable meals while the work is being done.

So wall dude has gone flakey which means our design session on Tuesday is a non starter unless he gets back to me asap.

A contractor that gets flaky before the job even starts is a bad sign. Usually they wait until they’ve been working for three or four days before they stop showing up and the job drags on for an extra week or three.

This is just to come out and price it up / tell us our options so he's definitely off the list for fitting.

I've messaged a pal who can hopefully come and have a look on Monday.

Went to the showroom today to pick our finishes and see the proposed plan and CGI mockup.

This is a view from the dining room of the "dream" design.

It doesn't look like much but it's a big job compared to the current shitty galley kitchen we have.

Oven is currently under the hob

Current internal door is roughly where the fridge and oven now are.

Current internal wall runs along the line of the worktop where the hob is

Current external door is where the worktop opposite the fridge and oven are

Still waiting on someone to come and look at the logistics and cost of getting the internal wall removed.

At the very least we're blocking off the external door to keep the U shape. That would leave the internal door where the fridge is. The guy said that would involve quite a redesign of this plan if the oven, fridge etc... had to move back round to be in line with the hob

We'll see.

Just had a call from my mate, he'll be round in the next hour or so to have a look at the wall and let us know the score with how much work it will involve.

He thinks we might have got lucky but is sending round a structural engineer next Thursday to have a look.

If we can do it without building regs getting involved it's a goer, if not it's going to take months of bureaucracy which we don't have the time to play with as everything needs done by the end of October.

Mate came out to measure up and price taking the back door out.

£1k for the door to be switched out and window supplied and fitted.

Does that include the wall?, I asked optimistically.

No, he has someone else that will do that but it'll be priced separately.

Should get a call from the kitchen supplier early next week with a rough idea of what they'll be looking to charge.

:annoyed:

Structural engineer has been...

The wall can come down, the dream design is on!!! :dude:

As with most things we've inherited in this place it's held up with blu tac and sellotape j/k but it's really nothing more than a partition, it's not even attached to any joists in the ceiling it's just kind of balancing

The supplier left a message today too, they have an estimated price so I've to call him back tomorrow to see what the score is £££ wise.

Just off the phone with the supplier and holy fuck has my WASP-y cabal came through. They've priced at at almost half of what I was expecting to pay and the guy said he could go even cheaper if we wanted to downgrade some of the appliances, um no pal, let's get that locked in

Still waiting to hear from the bricky about getting the back door out but after that it we just need to sort a date with the joiner and get the stuff order the it's game on.

Christmas Dinner at the JBJs's's's's'!

When we did our kitchen remodel, I opted for a slide-in, electric double oven/range with a glass top. It looks slick, and the top is easy to clean. I also went with one floor-to-ceiling cabinet for the pantry, which worked out really well.

We've pretty much done this. I can't remember the dimensions but it's the biggest and top spec pull out pantry they do. We went for a black glass top gas hob and a head height oven, I don't think it has a slide in door but it does have telescopic runners for getting stuff in and out.

Got little nooks for the microwave, ninja combi and toaster/ kettle too so it's going to keep the worktops nice and clear.

I'll be astounded if the rip out doesn't unearth other potential issues with the house but I'm super excited.

That'll be us in here a year mid-October and the kitchen was the big project to get done by that point so we're well on track.

MrsJBJ of course has now rationalised the money we've saved on the kitchen can be funelled toward a full rip out of the upstairs bathroom!!!

Woop woop, my back door is being removed next Wednesday (no pun intended) so I just need to tie in with the joiner and get everything ordered.

So builder who is due to do the wall up to the new window isn't coming until tomorrow meaning window guy had to call off today.

We've not even started and we're already behind schedule!

The back door is no more! There's another large window in front of the washing machine a d when the wall on the left comes down practically the full exterior wall is french doors or floor to ceiling windows so there's going to be soooooo much light.

I can't wait to get rid of that absolute pos sink for something you can actually fit a pot or pan in.

I started hijacking DCF's page!

So we start on Monday.

Turns out the new window is out of plumb on the Z axis by about an inch. I probably would never have noticed if the fitter hadn't mentioned it. He says he can work around it but we might notice it more once the walls are plastered. He said it's probably not worth getting it rectified though.

TBH at this point if a window slightly set further back on the left than the right side is the worst part of the kitchen I can live with it.

Ordered some funky black black nickel sockets and switches that we've used in the den. Very cool modern looking and don't pick up marks anything like the chrome ones we had in the old place.

Fitter is due to arrive between 8 and 9 on Monday to start demo. We're going away from Monday to Friday with the dog so hopefully they get a shit tonne done while we're out of the house.

Goodbye shitey kitchen, you will not be missed. I started ripping out the cabinets today just to give my pal a head start on the demo

Seriously look at that sink and dishwasher!!!
