National Hockey League 2018-2019

Didn't watch.

I'm getting Hockey Playoff Fatigue. It's Finals at school, which creates a LOT of extra work for me, and the games are 3 hour nightly commitments.
 
Justin Williams called for 3 penalties in the 1st period (he got away with a 4th). He's the captain! Show some discipline!
 
Canes looking like they have a rookie coach.

* Should've spoken to Williams after the first penalty.

* Needed to pull Mrazek between periods in Game 2. The third period was bad, and then he switched to McIlhenny and lost, and now what happens if he wants to switch back to Mrazek?

* Needed to either a) tell his team to dial back the non-hockey agenda; or b) go whole-hog on the non-hockey agenda. The problem with choice 'b' is that the Bruins are not the will o' the wisp Leafs, and just aren't easy to intimidate or get stupid. And if you don't dial back the physicality, sooner or later you wind up in the box - which is exactly what the Canes didn't want to do against a team whose special teams are performing at a high level.

Having said all that, the Canes play well, they just have nowhere near the depth of skill across the roster that the Bruins do. The (international) narrative is "wow, who knew the Bruins had this kind of depth??!??!" Well, people who watch hockey knew. The 19 game streak occurred without many of the 'top' players like Pastrnak, McAvoy, and others. And what we're really saying is: Bruce Cassidy is a great coach, because "next man up" really means "we all are well coached and know exactly what we need to do, and will do it."

That said, if you saw the Leafs series, the Bruins are definitely capable of turning in some clunkers. I doubt the Canes will let themselves be closed out at home.
 
Well, I think the Bruins are living rent-free in Williams' head at this point. He just looks like he can't believe it - they're capable of being nasty but also have more pure hockey skills. I think he's used to guys he can mess with, and now he's met his match. I think Marchand holding up the "C" to his chest and pointing him to the box is a classic hockey moment.

The Canes also have made some cheesy, dirty plays this series, and haven't benefited from them. That's always bad; no return on the risk.

Where's our @335clone Sharts fan? That team lives with a horseshoe (and a league that knows a good TV market when it sees one) up its ass. "Hand pass? What hand pass?" It's ok, it's not like it's an OT goal in the playoffs or anything.
 
What do you expect them to say? I understand why it's controversial and I'm sure they would be upset if it were the other way around.

Blame the GM's and league for the state of the rules. So if it isn't reviewable for whatever damn reason, and the refs didn't see it (like they didn't see a number of things in that game) then you quietly take the win and move on, knowing the Blues will be extra motivated in game 4. The Sharks have been hot and cold throughout the playoffs, and even the latter part of the season.


Your issue seems to be with the rules, not the Sharks or even the refs who didn't see the hand pass. I'm still learning about some of these rules, so I find it all interesting.

I thought both coaches handled it appropriately in the post game interview.
 
Actually, my issue is with Bettman. He's been terrible for a long, long time.

As for what you wrote, I agree. Just wondering if Sharks fans don't realize how much they've been aided by good fortune. Either way, look forward to beating them in 5 or 6 games. Should the Bruins not collapse.

Well, the officials also missed a "delay of game" penalty committed by Perron in their defensive zone (which he immediately followed up with a Blues goal), so I'd call it even. And, what's not mentioned in any of the articles I've seen is that right before the hand pass, Meier was hooked and dragged down (hooking or trip - your choice), so the logical outcome had a goal not been scored would have been a penalty against the Blues and a power play to the Sharks. Also, although it's not conclusive, one angle seems to show that the 'hand pass' rebounded off Bouwmeester's shin, so it may be moot, anyway.

At any rate, over the years, the Sharks have certainly suffered their fair share of bad calls and no-calls, and (as anybody who as ever worn a whistle knows) these things tend to even out over the long haul...

Really have to admit that you're such a one-note johnny...

No - his issue is with any team not wearing black and gold that gets any favorable treatment. If rules were always enforced evenly and consistently, Chara would probably be serving a five-to-ten for assault and battery, fifth or so offense...
 
That's not even; that's not close to how it works.

What I'd call it, along with every other hockey fan this AM, is pure crap. It's such a bad look for the league.

The fix is in. Fuck the NHL and Fuck Joe Thornton in his fat ugly fucking face. "Poor Joe deserves a cup" seems to be the sentiment. Who deserves it more? A city that supported a team for 50 years or a cheap shot artist hack who just celebrated his first multi-goal playoff game. Maybe that's why you don't have a cup Joe, bad karma and historically no ability to score multiple goals in a playoff game.

How four officials on the ice missed that obvious hand pass is beyond me. Even the goal scorer didn’t initially celebrate his goal because he knew it was a hand pass.

I like how the NHL showed the winning goal but was sure to edit out the HAND PASS on their website.

It’s funny that the HAND PASSER received an assist for his HAND PASS!

I predict the Blues will either stomp them 3 in a row fueled by anger or fold like lawn chairs and we’ll have to try again next year.

I don’t know how people could bet real money on NHL games with the shitty and possible crooked officiating. It’s like betting on WWE wrestling without the pre”fight” script.
 
I don't think there's a fix at all. I think Bettman has been, for the longest time, a bumbling nincompoop that makes Roger Goodell look like Pete Rozelle by comparison. The zebras are having a horrible post season, and there's little to no accountability. My suspicions about 'fixes' have to do with "the Toronto War Room" (and that phrase ought to elicit fits of laughter and frustration from fans).

The NHL could have done this better a long time ago - much as the pace of baseball is agonizing, at least MLB tends to get things right. And though they have glaring exceptions (cough, Saints-Rams, cough) the NFL does a far, far better job.

@bsman Looking forward to guzzling your bitter tears when Chara hoists the Cup above his head.

No, not at all. Age and maturity have taught me to never become too associated with a sports team to the extent that their performance drives my outlook. Sometimes "my" team sportses better, and sometimes the guys in the other shirts sports better, but at the end of it, I never fail to remember that it's simply a bunch of millionaires playing games for the ultimate benefit of billionaires...
 
BTW, I'm proctoring finals today and bored out of my mind, please half-excuse the trolling. I guess I'm the Marchand of this thread.
