My Fractal FM-3 thread.

Hey Mark. I have been keeping tabs on this thread and I don't think I have seen you mention anything about how the Fractal "feels" compared to an actual amp. That has been my problem with the modelling/digital stuff is that while there are good tones to be had the "feel" of a tube amp was never there for me. It seems like you are learning the tech and getting sounds you dig but how is the "feel"? Will the Fractal eventually replace your amps/effects or are you always gonna keep some analog around around because there is no replicating it?
This feels 99.9% like my 1970 Deluxe Reverb. I'm going to keep that amp, my 1x12 Suhr cab and a reduced pedalboard but this is going to replace my "big" rig for all of my working gigs.

The key has been to get a good monitor, learn how to EQ my sounds to just the frequency range that a real amp and speaker would have and experiment with the Impulse Responses and a little graphic EQ. I'm sold on it after a lifetime of hating digital modelers for exactly this reason.

I spent my morning setting up the sounds for a fusion gig that I have coming up in a couple of weeks. I'll give this a spin at rehearsal but I think it is good to go. March 19th I have a festival gig with this band and a (LOUD) club gig with All Star Trio in the evening so it will be tested pretty extensively that day. Once my FC6 controller shows up I'm going to start programming the presets for the cover gig pretty hard core. I have most of the sounds worked out already, but being able to access them in a way that will make sense to me on a 3.5 hour gig that has no rehearsals and 120 possible songs is important.

I might do a video in the next day or so going through my newer sounds.

I'm glad it's working for you.

Same here. I’ve been saying for years Mark needed to go this route because of the nature of his gigs. It will make his gigs easier in the long run.
It's just taken me this long to find something that actually sounds and feels right. This has been out for a year or two but it wasn't until I saw a few demos of the FM9 that I realized that Fractal world might be right for me.

I got to try it out against an HX Stomp through my EV speaker today at school. I've definitely made the right choice for me.

Granted, I know that the owner of the stomp hasn't really worked that hard at dialing in any sounds but what he had was pretty uninspiring.

It really does take a ton of tweaking with the Line 6 stuff. It can get there eventually, but it seems like the sounds in the FM are pretty amazing right out of the box.
Based on how awesome the Boss unit I just got sounds/feels, I ordered the new GX-100. Hopefully, it will replace the POD Go.

Rehearsal went well although I learned how little I know about editing and using the device from the actual controls on the box tonight. I’m really looking forward to setting this up with the FC6 and dialing in my rock sounds. Even though I’m Mike Stern fan playing through his SPX-90 sound all night was a little tiring.

So I've built a batch of sounds around my Deluxe Reverb and the Archean clean channel model that seems to like my tele more than the Deluxe model does.

ARCHEAN (100W PRS Archon)

Models:

  • Archean: Lead channel with Bright switch OFF
  • Archean Bright: Lead channel with Bright switch ON
  • Archean Clean: Clean channel
Master, Bass, Middle, Treble, Bright switch, Volume, Depth, Presence, Output Power (not modeled)

Power tubes: 6L6

  1. "You have to crank the MV on the real amp. The preamp is very "dry" so to get the juices flowing the power amp needs to be working hard. This also smooths out that funky midrange." [41]
  2. "I think part of the reason the real Archon needs to be cranked is because the power supply is too stiff. It's got six (!!!) big caps filtering the B+. That's too much filtering IMO unless you're playing at arena volumes. If I were to make a modification to the amp it would be a switch to disconnect four of those caps so the supply is more bouncy at moderate volumes. Maybe also a tube rectifier to add some more sponge." [42]
  3. Based on 100W amp [43]

I have to do a bunch of 90’s tunes with the faculty from the Popular Music conservatory at my school this week so I programmed the sounds for Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots (cranked Supro amp FTW!) and a Dual Rectifier sound for the Blink 182 and Green Day tunes. Cloning tones from albums is a pretty fun rabbit hole.
