I was focusing more on arranging than I was on actually playing jazz. I get what he was saying, I was just off target for what the "assignment" should actually be.I'm not sure I get it.

It's entirely possible that you have focused on the technical minutiae of the subject matter at hand that you've lost sight of your actual purpose for being there...at some point in time (and I'm quite sure that a recital is that point in time) you have to put all of that shit down and just PLAY SOME FUCKING MUSIC!
