Mark's Music School Diary.

Still waiting on my form and analysis test. Pretty sure it’s a much lower grade.

Turns out I didn’t do so bad. I still don’t feel like I understand the material as quickly as I should but apparently I’m on the right track.

Ok...second test for Biology is in - dropped from 105% to 99% and my class rank is 2/61. Slacking.

Poli Sci after the first exam is 92.5%

Music History is 98.33% based on a test and a few assignments related to my term paper.

Form and Analysis is currently a 94%. I have another test this week.

Started rehearsals for me recital today. Very excited with how its going. I think its going to be a good show for a Junior recital. I also have a combo concert in a few weeks.

I feel a little buried but nothing like last semester.

It's spring break. So I'm catching up on practicing and studying.

I had a rehearsal for my recital last weekend, worked up a bunch of special arrangements of the tunes and when I played the recordings for my private teacher he (for the first time in my college experience) very nicely told me that I had barked up the wrong tree in regards to what a junior recital was all about and I should ditch the crazy arrangments. And that I needed to better demonstrate the fact that I was learning to play jazz and not play how I played before I got to school. He was very nice but that was as brutal as anything I've been told since I'm back in school. Anyhow I'm reworking stuff and I have a rehearsal with three of the guys tomorrow. keyboard player threw me a bit of a complication tomorrow but I'll just have to work around him at this point.

Trying to get ahead on my music history term paper and study for the exam that we'll have a week from tomorrow too. My general ed classes at least don't have much for me to do over the break.

I'm not sure I get it.

He wanted you dumb down the arrangements to sound more 'jazz'-like?

What exactly was he criticizing?

I was focusing more on arranging than I was on actually playing jazz. I get what he was saying, I was just off target for what the "assignment" should actually be.

I had a rehearsal last night with Tyler, Martin, and Josh the sax player. I'm having trouble with the piano player and after the rehearsal and my lesson this morning I'm thinking that I'd rather not bother at this point. This weeks' rehearsal recordings went much better. I'm back on target and I think it'll still sound cool. Just a little out of my comfort zone.

Which is exactly where, at this point, you should be...

(Warning: unsolicited advice ahead)

It's entirely possible that you have focused on the technical minutiae of the subject matter at hand that you've lost sight of your actual purpose for being there...at some point in time (and I'm quite sure that a recital is that point in time) you have to put all of that shit down and just PLAY SOME FUCKING MUSIC!

Well, yeah.

I mean, its all about playing music but most students doing a 300 level recital are about 20 years old and have no professional artistic experience. My problem is that I looked at this recital like a gig and did what I would normally do instead of just doing what was expected of me.

Ok. Working away. Had another music history test today. I'm sure I'll find out how I did in two weeks. I got the Form and Analysis test from before break back on Tuesday. My grade was a 90% but there was so much red ink on it I asked how it was I got an A and he told me that the curve was kinda vicious. I actually got a 51% on the test before the curve but apparently I was one of the higher grades in the class so I still got an A.

Still doing recital prep. One of my committee members is not going to be there so I need to make a recording of the recital for him to grade and the guy who does it for the school is already booked so I guess I'll drag my own interface and a pair of mics down and record it myself. And save $250 in the process.

I also have a combo concert the week of my recital, my music history term paper is due and I have to present an argument regarding the homeless problem in Orange County to our local politicians for the Poli Sci Town Hall event the friday of that week as well. Yay.

Hehe. Here are examples of student recital flyers:
