Making Crab Cheese Wontons for the first time tonight

I will try to remember to take pictures...this should be pretty easy -

Thanks in advance to Phil and Mark for giving me some ideas on what to use as a "fryer".

I'm going with the heavy "spaghetti boiling pan" method...can't find my wok...

OK! They turned out way better then I expected...my camera is dead so the pics suck (used phone camera). I just bought some wonton wrappers and some fake crab and some lowfat cream cheese. I mixed up the crab and cream cheese with some garlic salt. Then I just stuffed the wonton wrappers and sealed them with a little water...

Then I put enough olive oil in my pan and heated it up...and well, I fried them.

I had some good hot mustard.

My wife is cooking next to me. She made a chicken veggie fried rice thing, it was awesome too.

Super easy and super yummy fellas! Get a good hot chinese mustard and you will be golden!

Fake crab? Krab??

Looks yummy, though.:thu:

rather than using just water to seal them, you can also use an egg wash (just an egg beaten with some water) which I have found seals better and if you use a bit on the outside helps give a nice golden brown sheen. Also, peanut oil or just regular veggie oil fries better than olive oil and is much cheaper.

I'll try the egg thing.

My wife won't eat anything that is fried unless it is fried in olive oil.

Ok then:thu:

She sounds 'expensive':eek::wink:

I'd hate to guess what it would cost to fill both our deep friers with EVOOmessedup0, probably about the same as filling the suburban.

Have you ever made potstickers? They are very similar to the wontons, and you use a lot less oil. Yummy.

She's just freaky about food. We rarely fry anything...but yeah, it is expensive...I am on a quest to find a less expensive olive oil blend to fool her, er, I mean...

Potstickers? Sounds good...I will have to find a recipe unless you have one!

just save the old bottles, fill them up with a blend. Start 70/30 olive to veggie and add a bit less olive each time. idn_smilie

We make pork and chicken potstickers. get the butcher to grind up some chicken breasts for you, you don't need that much. Should be lots of recipes on the net, it's been a while since I helped make the filling. We use the round wonton wrappers, the egg wash then fry/steam them. They should be brown on the bottom, and crispy. The tops are just steamed. The dipping sauce is key to your success.

That sounds yummy...my youngest kid is freaked out by cream cheese...so these sound like they are more up her alley! Thanks man!

No prob!

here is a recipe that sounds fairly close to what we do.

http://www.backofthebox.com/recipes/appetizers/chicken-pot-stickers-g.html

the difference is we add some chilli oil to the soy sauce to make the dipping sauce. You might want to hunt around for different sauce recipes or filling recipes to suit your families tastes.

No reason to be intimidated by these at all. My wife goes to my sons class every year around chinese new years and has the class help make and cook them. She started in 2nd grade. The kids mix the filling (chicken is pre cooked the night before) and fill and seal the potstickers. She helps them cook them of course. The kids love them. 2 years ago the class went to Chinatown in SF a couple weeks after they had made potstickers, and ordered potstickers. The told the waitress they liked the ones they made in class better.love0
