Lady Gaga at the Oscars

She's an artist. She's not bound by categories, old rock tropes, or typical female music job titles. She simply expresses herself the way she wants, even if it's manipulating the media for a minute. I wouldn't be surprised if she put out a Klezmer album next year.

I don't need you to know if I like her or not to get what she's doing.

It's not his voice, it's what he does with it. Super-expressive, very intelligent phrasing, and still has the ability to be surprising. What more can you want from a pop singer?
I've never thought of it like that, but I can appreciate it. Maybe I'm a bit shallow our superficial, but great singers for me have always been about the voice.

Dylan himself has recently had words on the subject:
The 73-year-old, who rarely talks about his work, asked why critics complain he "can't sing" and sounds "like a frog" but do not "say that about Tom Waits?"

"Critics say my voice is shot, that I have no voice. Why don't they say those things about Leonard Cohen? Why do I get special treatment?" he continued.
[...]
Dylan did not perform, but instead appeared on stage with a pile of loose papers, which he referred to saying: "I'm going to read some of this." After a standing ovation, Dylan said: "Critics say I can't carry a tune and I talk my way through a song. Really? I've never heard that said about Lou Reed. Why does he get to go scot-free?" he asked.

He's earned the right to yell at any cloud he wants, but I've heard all of these things said about all of those people.

(I think if Lou Reed suggested it was time for his Great American Songbook album, someone might try to gently break it to him that he's been dead for a while and that even if he wasn't that would arguably not be playing to his strengths. It's unlikely it would be worse than Rod Stewart's effort, though, if he chose to follow through, dead or not dead.)

The good thing about Lady Gaga being famous is that it shows you CAN become extremely popular and famous as a woman even though you have a weird face.

And a cock

Yeah, I've heard a lot of vocal disdain pitched towards Cohen and Waits, the latter right here over the years. Dylan is an amazing singer, but I'd still give it to Tom. The voices and "personas" that inhabit his songs and his singing never ceases to amaze.

Very persuasive takes on the voices of Dylan, Waits and Cohen.

I never really thought about it from that angle. I'm inclined to agree.

They are as inseparable with their lyrics, as Wilfred Brimley is with big diabeetus. Hearing one without the other seems foreign and strange.

And as is the case with Mr. Brimley, the sonic assault on my senses makes me want to punch them in the throat equally.

Excellent examples of brilliance masked by nuisance. I just can't hang in long enough to appreciate the former.
