Lady Gaga at the Oscars

I love a lot of today's music, I just hate the majority of what is played on the radio. I would rather watch you play banjo on a stage than be in the the enormo-dome watching a Katy Perry concert

Again, right there with you. I'm always discovering and seeking out new music from new artists. The stuff I'm listening to the most lately is from artists still in their 20s, some just barely into them and others edging on 30 (nearing the age of no longer trustable). New music has never been the issue, but what's widely popular...it's been hard for me to listening to 99% of that stuff for ages.

Unfortunately I do think age plays a factor in that those of us grew up listening to real musicians ply their trade have a notion/expectation that some who is labelled as a singer actually be able to sing. Younger folks and the mindless masses seemingly have no issue reconciling the irony and stupidity of this tragic modern flaw in the so called music business. It's very sad.

The one benefit, is that if you find these smaller artists and love them, you can support them directly and see them in more intimate venues instead of arenas and stadiums.

There has always been, and will probably always will be, crappy pop music. I grew up in the 60s/70s and it was just as bad then. Name me a song by Bobby Sherman, or David Cassady. Remember the Archies or the Cowsills? Paul Revere and the Riaders had their own TV show. Those are only memorable to me because they were plastered everywhere and I had an older sister that used to read Tiger Beat. There were probably more one-hit-wonders in back then than there are now.

I would have added The Monkees to the list, but they had some talented folks backing them. It wasn't until the end of their run that they guys actually began playing their own instruments and singing (Nesmith excluded).
Did anyone back then consider David Cassady a real, serious musician? The Monkees? The Archies? Fast forward to today and you have the equivalent of 50 year old men listening to David Cassady and arguing that he has hella talent.

She actually began playing piano and singing under her actual name, Stefani Germanotta, so I think maybe her true colors, or at least other interests, showed before she did electronic dance pop.

Yes.

And she got little attention.

Is that fair?

No. Welcome to the music industry.

Just to be perfectly crystal clear (because I'm still pretty fucking bent about being labeled a mysogynist for no discernable reason). I never said she lacked talent or ability. I don't follow sell outs, and nothing she does appeals to my tastes. That fact may be a bias due to how I feel about her methods, but I don't care, and I make no apologies for it. I have that right, and a right to dislike something or someone without it making me a bad guy.

To each their own.

My opinion of her is extremely unlikely to change. That is mostly because at 45 fucking years old, I would like to spend less of my remaining time forcing myself to appreciate something and more time exploring and enjoying the things I do appreciate. There's so much out there to discover in this world, and precious little time to do it. Only a complete moron would waste the opportunity to learn and discover, and acquire knowledge just to placate someone else's idea that they must like something.

I'm happy for those who enjoy her work. I'm not among that crowd.

On a related note: just saw a Facebook post from premier guitar about Marilyn Manson admitting to causing mysogyny.

Yup.

So a post wherein I called him shit, labeled me the mysogynist.

That just fucking figures.

Sorry for the rant, but that pisses me right the Fuck off.

An academic achievement isn't interchangeable with knowledge, wisdom or common sense. It also doesn't often include clairvoyance as one of its perks.

You'll find very few huge words in lyrics..

My old lady, and the lady next door..
Floating down the river on a shit house door..
Tie my dickey to a tree,to a tree..
Tie my dickey to a tree......

@OGG , I'd like to apologize; I misread the paragraph in question.

I still strongly disagree with your thesis, but I fucked up.

No.

Some (most) of the acts you mentioned were pioneers in that regard and for the most part get a pass based on originality.

I've known Alice Cooper since I was 4 years old. Lovely guy. I find his shtick to be pretty lame.

Elton John is a fucking brilliant musician on a level that simply can't be compared to Lady Gaga. She has a lot of talent and ability, but her shtick is just rehashed Madonna narcissism.

Marilyn Manson can choke on a bag of dicks. His music is shit, his act is shit, and from personal experience, he is shit.

Kiss was original. They still suck. If not for their shtick, they'd have been forgotten in the 70's.

Gaga clearly has the goods to be a viable commercial success without all of her ridiculous eccentricity. I'm all for artists using the quality of their work rather than the debased side show circus freak persona to succeed.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. It's too late for her. You can't put the Genie back in the bottle. She made her name by using theatrical, attention whoreish means. That should remain her legacy.

Plenty of wildly talented and successful acts out there who don't lean on gimmicks in order to sell records or concert tickets. When Jason Mraz was playing the local coffee houses on his nights off from delivering pizzas, he didn't resort to wearing clown shoes and a zoot suit with a neon motorcycle helmet to get noticed. He put his nose to the grindstone and honed his craft to a point where success was the only possible outcome. I love that kid. He inspires me endlessly, and is as genuine as anyone in the business.

So, harsh?

Maybe.

So be it. There are too many fabulous artists out there for me to give my time to, that don't go for the cheap attention grabbing Sideshow Bob bullshit.

I can live with harsh.

I would much rather listen to Lady Gaga than Jason Mraz. I'm sure he's a really nice guy and I admire the work ethic, but there's nothing there I personally like to listen to.

Wrap yourself in a large baby blanket to protect yourself from the extreme cruelty in this thread.

No my criticism of pop music is that it has devolved into "find a pretty face, hire a team of writers, make up an image, support artist for a few years then flush her down the toilet". The Stones were musicians, Katy Perry is a pretty face that has a passable singing voice. This has been going on for a long time but ever since the slow death and consolidation of the music industry it has evolved into a fine art.

Lets not all kid ourselves, it's not like Lady Gaga has a set of pipes that would even put her in the same league as someone like Adele. When everyone is talking about the amount of talent she has, I just don't see it. I could go to a local Church on any given Sunday and find someone who has a better singing voice. To me she is just an auto-tuned shock value sideshow that sings reasonably well. The fact that someone of her caliber is counted among real talent just speaks volume to the lack of quality talent that is out right now. At least when we are talking about the talent that the music industry wants you to see.

Actually, I think her strongest suit is her songwriting. But then it's also the full package that makes her most appealing... songwriting + voice + dance beats + dancing + other visuals + a message that resonates with people. Bob Dylan didn't have the best singing voice, but people still found value in other aspects of his performance. Others criticized him for not being the best singer or for being so controversial at the time. It's ok if you don't see the talent. It would be pretty boring if everyone were interested in the same stuff.

It's not really my taste in music, but I can appreciate that she obviously has a great deal of talent and drive, which I find admirable.

Let's make one thing PERFECTLY CLEAR: Mick Jagger didn't get where he is by pouting or shaking his ass.

He are Serious Musician who has breathed new life into the maracas as a serious instrument for serious musicianly music.
Dear God,that makes no sense to me at all..
Let me know where you lay at the end..
I'll place a heart shaped tambourine...

I agree with everything except for about Dylan. There are no better singers.
