Jeff Beelzebub is Now Worth $100 Billion

in all seriousness Gary I was hoping you'd catch the "wink wink" I had behind my post...I know Peen would get it and I was hoping that you would too :(

Well, Facebook is probably here until something else replaces it, which might be worse. Again, Facebook is not the problem, it is what some people do there. The majorty of folks I have on my Facebook feed are pretty chill folks. That's where I get most of my funny pics from.

El Blanchardo knows that irony is a tool of the MAN. Gary is a natural soul. Wholesome granola. Frodo Lives!

At what point does a company become, "The Man"?

Is it based on revenue? Bad press? Number of employees?

I honestly think it's time we destroy the internetz and go back to 1980....I mean sure everybodys world was smaller, more insulated but in all seriousness was it not better ? I mean (second time I've used I mean in the same paragraph) every town and city was unique because information moved at a snails pace BUT what you didn't know didn't matter. It was less IS more. you had time to focus on things instead of being pulled in a 1oo different directions. there was no BLACK FRIDAY, no small business Saturday, no Cyber Monday #notpolitical but anyhoo....with less external stimuli we had time to just be...we had time to immerse ourselves in one album for three months, I mean sure there was no Apple Music where we could access 199,000,000 albums but we also didn't have to worry about net neutrality #notpolitical , we didn't have to go to a generic corporate movie theater and we didn't have to worry about Jeff Beezlebub using drones to spread 'dumbdown" chemtrails on us and creating a dystopian society of PRIMEpeople

Well it's not like there was less useless information back then. There was network television with news and endless commercials. There were magazines everyone read, also covered with ads. Everyone listened to the radio for new music and music news. And they had black Friday back as far as the 1960s, not sure it was called exactly that though. We also had the Sears and other mail order catalogs.

The internet has mostly replaced the phone book, mail order catalogs, product brochures, classified ads, ways to make payments, your encyclopedia, and sources for porn. That's about it. People reading their smart phones all day used to just read People magazine. Nothing has really changed except you don't have to be at home or a phone booth to do all those things now.

I would argue people might be slightly more literate as they do use written language as a form of instant communication now. Doesn't mean they spell correctly, but it is something we didn't do a lot of in the 70s unless you were into writing.

well as I said my OP was wink wink nudge nudge but since you addressed it I will reply that news was less biased back then, not so many agendas. The news that was to be had was more thought out and less speculative. You got one Sears and One JC Penny's catalog per year if I remember right. Rolling stone was still a somewhat underground magazine at least until Spin came along. I really don't remember "black Fridays" back then but then again there was only the local newspaper to alert you (or local tv commercials) of sales the day after thanksgiving (at K-Mart) but I don't remember people camping out to be first in line.

When you say "Nothing has really changed except you don't have to be at home or a phone booth to do all those things now." ....well that in and of itself has changed society immensely because society in general has become insulated, for instance. I was waiting at a Pizza place yesterday for my takeout pizza and a couple in front of me were waiting on their two slices to eat in store. They weren't reading People magazine and they weren't having a conversation (with each other)...they were both eyes glued to their smart phones typing away and this couple was in their late forties or early fifties. So I'd say things have changed.

Lol at the "people are slightly more literate now as they use (modified) written language " . ....I fixed that one 4 U.

C ya

you can't control language. it is as it's used.

OK, more ambitious young fellows like myself used to send away for catalogs like Carvin and Fender. You just had to send them a letter asking for one. And it's the same exact information that would be on a guitar manufacturers website today. Also, between Rolling Stone (Crawdaddy was the real underground rag back them) and Spin there were many magazine that covered rock music like Cream, Circus, Hit Parader, etc. In fact in the last days of Tower Records I couldn't even begin to name the number specialized music rags that were out - I still like and occasionally buy Mojo. Google history of Black Friday sales, it goes way back. But I actually remember them. We used to camp out for concert tickets and the Rose Parade back in the day. So I'm sure people were camping out for other things too. And who didn't have a mom or aunt who had newspaper clippings with coupons all over the dining table? What's the difference?

Of course your pizza line mates weren't reading a magazine, but they might have been in the seventies. Texting is probably the one big change. But they are communicating, just not with each other or you.

I don't actually disagree with you, I just like people to remember how there were just as many useless things to spend time on back then. And when I go backpacking I am basically out of range for phone reception, so it's not hard for me to imagine a time without texting and internet. I put myself in that situation on a semi-regular basis.
