They were always a hard rock pop band. Lots of their hits had a nice pop structure, catchy chorus, and even some Ramones “hey, hey, hey” (since their debut album came out on the heels of punk rock). Ain’t Talkin Bout Love had a simple, play for the song, melodic solo in it. And in support of pop they had a great backup singer which is a required pop element. And they did some great covers of classic songs.
But modern metal guitar lead playing wouldn’t exist today without Van Halen. period.
