got me thinking after I read a youtube comment (at the time of this thread it was the fourth comment)....Is Tool Metal? well one guy in the reply says " Tool isn't even Metal, although there are elements of metal in their music" that was in response to the OP making a joke about James telling Lars "hey Lars, let's play a Tool song and then Lars goes.......ehhhhhh ummmmm...."
Then someone replies that "Joke all you want tom about Lars but he's a self made millionair who happens to be the drummer in the greatest metal band of all time"

Furthermore HIAR says that Tool is a metal jamband. So more to chew on.

So here we are then...

What ki nd of music is Tool. If they were a metal jamband living on weed and vegan burritos would they be able to create the complex music that they do? (the answer is no....they drink wine like all the great poets and thinkers of past generations)

secondly Metallica might not be the most important metal band of all time although certainly one of them but they might be the greatest by sheer longevity, influence and fans not to mention album sales.

What say you ?

The best metal band was, is, and will always be pre-Dio Sabbath. This is not debatable. Unlike practically any other metal, Sabbath fucked.

Tool is the Zack Snyder of music, so I don’t give a shit.

Since you are a man of intelligence what are your thoughts about this

and also since you like Jass you might want to watch this Jass drummer react to Danny Carey

More like progressive metal than they ever could be a "jamband". There's no real improvisation, but they have the odd time signatures and thematic builds that are far more progressive than most metal bands.

And no, Metallica is not the best metal band ever. I can't really say who is, especially since this is a subjective exercise. I like a lot of different bands that have been categorized at metal or one of it's subgenre's. Faith No More, Suicidal Tendencies, Fates Warning, Anthrax, Soundgarden (can of worms...opened), and the one-off Damn the Machine are among my favorites.

Then I love Living Colour, King's X, Incubus, Deep Purple, and quite a ew other artists that have been mislabeled as metal at points either during the evolution of music and it's genres or just a myopic label w/o really looking at th scope of their music (or that scope expanding away from what one would solely classify as metal).

Then you get into the idea of hard rock. For me, that's Purple, Zeppelin, etc. ...heavier than "rock", but not as heavy as "metal".

What weighs more, a pound of rock or pound of metal?

I never said the best and to Flamencology I never said the greatest as in favorite but rather in nrecord sales, time as a band together, body of work and said body of work regarded by critics, fans, and sales. also Hall of fame and lastly influence. next to Sabbath the most influential metal band ....it's probably like hard rock ac/dc then the kid progressses to Sabbath and then Metallica and then starts his first metal band and goes in whatever direction. When the kid gets famous they ask about binfluences and he names ac/dc, sabbath (of course) and Metallica (of course)

No need to play defense/clarify, I understood what you typed. The whole best/greatest notions are interchangeable as when it comes to art, not matter anyone thinks it's nothing but subjective.

As such, I was only referring to to my take on Tool and the greatness of Metallica. Fine bands. I don''t listen to either a lot or regularly, but in the last decade or so I'm far more likely to listen to Tool than Metallica. They are both so far down the list though...as is metal in general, just something I pop on every once in a while...

Metallica - Kill 'Em All thru the 'Black Album' were pretty darned good. The best ever? Eh...

After The Black Album, they became Mehtallica :embarrassed:

Iron Maiden's Killers was pretty good pioneer Metal.

A lot of metal lead guitar playing wouldn't exist without EVH
A lot of metal bands wouldn't exist without Metallica
Pretty everything would be the same today if Tool never existed (but I do like their music occasionally and saw them a lot live in the early days)
I don't think metal in any form would exist without Sabbath and Deep Purple.
I've never heard the genre of music that spawned from Led Zeppelin, whatever they were doing was completely unique.

Rush, in the beginning, wanted to be like Led Zeppelin

Tool is a metal band that tries way too damn hard to be "progressive". Interestingly they haven't progressed in about 20 years. Great players, dull music - although they do have the odd inspired moment.

Metallica did 3 good to great albums in the 80's, and haven't really been particularly relevant since the early 90's. They'll be remembered as one of the better 2nd tier metal bands as far as influence goes.

What both bands have in common is a cult-like fanbase that are ridiculously easy to trigger.
