I guess I picked a bad day to rototill and reseed the backyard.

Wildfire mojo.

I just got done fixing our backyard yesterday.

Isn't it like 100 degrees in California? Sound like a bad day to do yard work even without a fire.

Damn.

When I was a kid, we would have "Smog days' here in California. The air was literally so bad that they wouldn't let kids outside to play at school and there were advisories to stay inside. As they got pollution under control that stuff went away but apparently it was even worse in the 1960's with the Kaiser Steel plant pumping out crap into the valleys and other pre-emission regulation here in SoCal. Just the garbage in the air from the fires that we're having so much more frequently is giving me flashbacks. I need to go hose the ash off of my car tomorrow when it all settles down.

Yep, I was in grammar school in the sixties. Living within 2 miles of the mountains and you couldn't see the mountains on smoggy days. Recess was cancelled on red flag days when the smog was bad. If you spent 30 minutes outside you would have a pain in your lung if you inhaled too deeply. Good times. Trump wants them back and California emissions laws repealed. He should be hung upside down on the street like Mussolini.

From last night:

We could see the flames coming over Santiago Peak from in front of our house. When I took this it looked like it was a lot closer until I got online and saw where the fire really was. It’s amazing how close fire can seeem at night when it’s this large even 18 miles away.

Just walked outside and the smoke is t as bad. I do have ash all over my recently washed car though:

It's been an uneasy period of relative calm in my area throughout this recent explosion of wildfires. There have been a few smaller ones somewhat nearby, but nothing big. Yesterday there was one down in San Pasqual Valley near the San Diego Safari Park (AKA Wild Animal Park), that could have been very bad. Fortunately, all of the CalFire aerial force is parked at the Romana airport and on 24/7 readiness. This fire was in a direct straight line from that runway and only 9 miles away. The CalFire guys went full HAM on that shit! It was like a scene from a Vietnam war movie.

Anyway, despite living in the worst possible place for this shit, the heat, high winds, the ripe for a fire growth, so far so good. The air quality is atrocious but the sky is relatively clear. We can see the dark smoke plumes far away. At night we can see the glow from several fires burning well north of us.

Keeping fingers crossed and thinking of those in the shit.

November is a long way off.

I like watching those car crash videos on youtube.

About a week ago I was watching a USA/Canada one, and the final clip wasn't a crash, but somebody near San Diego on one of the freeways driving past a whole mountain that was on fire. The opposite lane was blocked off because it was closer to the flames, but Holy Toledo!!! Not something you see everyday on a dashcam

Yeah. Scenes like that are not that rare down here. I've shot a few such videos myself.

This is from last year, but it is one of my favorite photos documenting late summer in California. The Loma fire as viewed from the Santa Cruz lighthouse

I had the opposite problem last year, and obviously not an actual problem compared to wild fires. I rented a big ass tiller and broke my back getting it out of the car. Tilled the whole area around our pool and leveled it. Looked great. Seeded it and took care of it for a week. Then we got crazy rain and ALL the top soil and seed got washed down into one corner of the pool area. Big stinking pile of mud and rotting baby grass. What was left of the lawn was a collection of pebbles and bare soil. And rage.
