How much is your max for a given piece of gear.

i don't have a set limit. that said, i am pretty OCD-style responsible when it comes to finances, so my first priorities are making sure the bills are paid, investments are funded (retirement, kids' college) and savings are appropriately padded. whatever is left over is possible gear money.

Tend to be a tight-wad, always looking for the right price, but if it's something I absolutely must have, I'll grit my teeth and spend whatever it takes to get it, reminding myself "It's only money..." thwap0

And then I'll bitch about it later! 8)

$500.00 for a guitar until my playing improves.
I have spent way to much on gear just to sell it off.
Now a Heritage 535 used I'd drop $1.5K tops

hmmm

I do not know. I am notoriously cheap... Yet, I own things like an AXE FXII and a Peter Frampton Les Paul...

So, I just can't tell you

The few things I've bought that retailed with MAPs, I've gotten for half that.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet, but great deals are out there if you're patient and persistent.

I ask because everything is MAP now. So if you're getting half MAP, it's a much better deal.

I just look for a good value. I'd say that 3K is pretty close to my limit, but if I saw something for more, and it was a good deal, I'd see if I could part with the equivalent amount of gear. I don't spend new money on guitars, etc., so if I see something that I can't live without, I have to pay the price.

For me:
Guitars: about 900, if it's a really good guitar. But I have enough so a guitar would have to really blow me away to get it.
Pedals: about $150
Cables: I like Monster cables. I know they are overpriced, and their HDMI cables are highway robbery, but I like their guitar cables
Strings: $5. I get the Hybrid Slinky Set.

It depends. I cringe if I spend more than a grand for a guitar, but oftentimes, it's hard to find the guitars I want (like my Gretsch Country Clubs), at cheap prices. As for amps - I'm not a brand snob. As long as it sounds good to me, and looks reasonably well made, I'll usually go with the lower cost amp. I don't need a boutique amp, or a boutique stomp box.

I'm a cheap bastard. I won't spend more than a grand on anything.

It has to blow me away to spend more than $1000 on a guitar or amp. It has only happened a few times for a guitar and never for an amp.
