How much is your max for a given piece of gear.

Well since I was ready to pay $3200 for this trussart, that might be my cap.

Guitars and amps, $1800 is my maximum.
That said, I've never paid even half that for either to this day.

It has to blow me away to spend more than $1000 on a guitar or amp. It has only happened a few times for a guitar and never for an amp.
the first time I read this, I honestly didn't see the "away," and I was thinking, yeah, no shit. I'd spend that, and where do I buy one??

My only rule anymore is, whenever possible, get what I really want even if it involves saving for a bit later. I try not to compromise if it's something I really want.

And then take care of stuff like it's family.

Not really. My aim is always a bargain. That means you gotta be a little flexible on what you want and grab good deals.

^This. A good deal is a good deal. I work from percentages of MSRP and of street, not solid immutable numbers. $1K could be a great price for a Les Paul, but several times over what a more inexpensive guitar is worth.

As it turns out, the most I've spent to date on a guitar was $750 for a like new LP Classic w/ohsc. That was actually a great deal All my bigger amps were bought quite a long time ago and were all good to really good deals. Oddly, I haven't spent more than a few hundred on a given amp head or cab. My modded 2-cab '66 Super Reverb w/replacement speakers was all of $300, but that was about 20 years ago. I think my Ampeg SVT 8x10 fridge was $200 or $225, my Sovtek MiG50H "Tube Midget" head around that amount too, maybe $250. My Risson 4x12 cab was around $125 or so. I think my '68 Kustom 100 rig (head and 115 cab) was $225 or so, but that was in the late '70's.

So, short answer: I'm a cheap bastard, but no. No line in the sand.

I'm definitely a bargain hunter, but that could mean $250 on a modest guitar, or $3000 on a nice vintage piece. Amps and effects, I see more as appliances. I don't think I'd ever spend more than about $250 for an effect, or $2k for an amp, and it would have to be a really sweet amp.
