Here we go, and be honest now, do you care when someone says a band or album or song you like sucks?

I usually let it just slide in the moment, then visit their house at night and burn it down with them inside :shrug:

But nah, I don't really care. Music taste changes and there's a gazillion reasons to like or dislike particular bands and songs. Can't really be bothered by someone not liking the same stuff as me. Hell, there's music I can be infatuated with for a while myself and being bored to death with it later.

I feel bad when I think about how I would casually insult peoples’ taste in music back in the daze. I guess it’s a maturity thing, at least in my case. Used to be that the good bands were AWESOME and everything else SUCKS. Especially disco.

So Dan, if you’re out there, sorry I made you feel bad when I said Billy Joel sucks. And Kelly, I didn’t mean to throw Rush back in your face like that.

OTOH, when people are older and supposedly wiser, and think they are now bona fide music critics so if they think a band sucks it REALLY sucks, that is even less excusable.

Anyway, to get back to the original question, when the shoe is on the other foot yes it makes me feel bad. But I get over it. After I change the lyrics of a popular tune to make it torture porn featuring their name and sing it a few times. :grin:
 
I used to get upset but then I had kids. They tell me my taste in music sucks all the time.
To be honest, with most of the bands I gravitate to, I think half of their music sucks and really enjoy the other stuff.
I also agree with @ColourofFire , I can be all in with a band for a while and eventually get bored.
There is this one band though, The Bird Index...they truly suck.
 
I have learned to live with it. I love a lot of music that other people don't like, and I dislike a lot of music that others rave about. I have learned that it isn't that the music I don't like sucks, it is just that it isn't to my taste. Others may learn that, or they may not. The Grateful Dead hate does get old after a while, but I didn't get them for years, and it was an acquired taste for me, so I let it slide now.
 
This is one of the reasons I like listening to Rick Beato when he reviews the top 10 songs in various charts. He is an experienced musician and record producer. He is also pretty gracious in his reviews for the most part and does point out strong points in the writing and/or production when he hears them. He saves his rants against over use of auto-tune for other videos, knowing that most every pop hit is auto-tuned to the hilt....
 
Honestly? It makes me sad. Incredibly sad. I want to help them somehow but I don't know what to do. It's making me sad right now just thinking about it. Why does someone decide to live a joyless life and refuse to listen to good music? What's that like only listening to bad music?

I had more to say but, I can't go on right now.

It’s a real shame our taste tend to be so similar. You strike me as the type I could have a great time having a few too many and arguing about bands.

I used to, because I felt like they were missing the point, deliberately being elitist and insulting, or just acting stupid. After experiencing the belligerent ignorance and insanity that US politics has become in the last 5 years or so, it doesn't faze me at all these days when someone says "Tribal Tech sucks" or "Yngwie is boring". :lol::lol::lol::facepalm:

I point that shit out to people all of the time. I don't get upset about them not liking something I like, but I find it annoying when they dismiss something they don't like in that manner. It's pedantic as hell of me, but if they're going to say stupid shit around me, they're likely to get called out on it.

There's lots of stuff I don't like, but there's no reason to shit on it, unless I'm w/ really close friends and giving each other shit about anything and everything is a big part of the relationship.

This is usually where I live. As to my previous post, I've more often than not pointed out the difference between not liking something and it being objectively bad for art and media that I don't like...some of which does actually suck. Debating things can be fun, all the more so if you're not "emotionally invested" in the subject.
 
The older I get, the less energy I spend/waste on stuff I don't like or pearls before swine situations. I do enjoy the odd amicable taste argument, you know, why I don't think Thom Yorke is a genius, and why I don't think U2 have released anything relevant since Achtung Baby, how a poorly produced snare drum can ruin a track and why Paul Di'Anno was a better front man for Iron Maiden than Bruce Dickinson, and why Killers is the only good album they've ever made.

On a side note, I generally find that music is less tribal than it used to be. When I was a kid one could not like, say, electropop and heavy metal - one had to make a choice or suffer exclusion from one camp or another. I remember being held up by some older boys when I was like 10 or 11 and just getting seriously into music, and they checked my walkman for excuses for beating me up. Luckily I was into 'harder' stuff like Depeche Mode and left the scene with their stamp of approval. My older sister got kneed in her stomach pretty badly on a similar occasion.
