Has #MeToo impacted your listening or viewing at all?

I think #metoo ended over the summer. Or maybe early last year.

The whole 'believe women' thing was never real. Men never really did, unless it doesn't inconvenience them. And increasingly celebrity women don't care either.

Everyone who used to have #metoo in their twitter bio erased it. I think going forward unless you get a rape on video, and have no imperfect 'slut' backstory for people to smear, no one will ever believe you. Which is tragic. But shows what a misogynistic country we still live in. And how this whole thing just went full circle.

I stopped listening to Warren Zevon years ago after reading his autobiography. Just awful. But I was never a big fan.

The big one for me is Cosby. I still make all of his jokes. I just no longer give them the proper credit.
Dang. I never did read that as I was not sure I wanted to dive into what was underneath the dark writing that I viewed largely as sarcasm, that I came to enjoy during law school. Guess I will need to go at least check out the content, and reconsider Mr. Zevon.

Lots of 80’s movies I thought were fun frolics back in the day are now in the dust bin. Sixteen Candles, John Hughes stuff, etc. I mean the culture I experienced back then should NOT have been that way, and it was. So there is that. But no need to watch it now.

Cosby
Growing up in Philadelphia region, he was a constant presence. He was always involved in numerous philanthropic efforts around the city. As a kid, a good neighborhood friend’s Dad used to play his albums on the weekends. I’d hear him on the Fat Albert re-runs, see him on re-runs of I Spy in the afternoons then later on the Cosby show. He was on the news regularly and a huge Temple U alum/supporter and hugely visible every year that March madness was coming around.

This really positive image and familiarity made the occasional whispering and eventual allegations against him hard for people to believe it was possible.
I had a similar experience. Teachers played vinyl Cosby LP’s in school. The Fat Albert Show was a positive thing for me, and Cosby’s work there was positive for this suburban white kid back then. And I liked the few I Spy episodes I saw.

So that one hurt, but I can’t listen to him at all now.

And MJ. Really a bummer. But yeah, as a general rule, can’t really listen. At least for long. The early stuff when he is a kid is particularly painful to me, as it is all just so hypocritical, and his yucky inner monster was being created then by the abuse of his elders. It is still hard for me not to check out the Thriller video when/if I run across it, as my college girlfriend at the time was into dance and choreography, and could do the whole routine, and she beat into my skull how great it was.

And yet, it is all so disgusting.

I watched Annie Hall and Manhattan over the weekend. I don’t feel guilty. I think Woody’s a creep at best, but I still love his work.
