Guitar Center opening location a mile from my house

Guitar center is what it is. I think we all know that here.

If I had one that close I would be raiding the dumpster every few days during the off hours.

I am just a bit surprised that a company that is bleeding money and trying to stave off creditors is opening new stores.

I keep meaning to check in at Guitar Center, but haven't for about a year. I tend to prefer Guitar Showcase in San Jose (a locally-owned shop) or Gryphon in Palo Alto.

Yeah, there is no reason to go to GC when Showcase is within an easy drive. Hell, I would rather go to Starving Musician than GC any day. Have you been to Sylvan in Santa Cruz? If not, you should stop in when you are on that side of the hill. They actually encourage you to play the pre war Martins and the high end Santa Cruz's. And the Nash's too.

mmmmm NASH mmmmm

Yeah -- it's not like handling a Nash is going to result in anything that requires they price it as "NOS"!

I've heard of Sylvan, but haven't stopped there before. Perhaps I'll have to check it out. The only real problem with Guitar Showcase is that parking there can be a challenge.

I have a GC about a mile from me that I drive pass daily. I go in maybe 3 to 4 times a year. I would do more business with them but as we all know their trade in policy is the pits.

It may good to have a close guitar repair shop. They sent a coupon for a $40 setup. Since I'm a lazy ass who doesn't like to set up guitars with tremolos or split-shaft tuners, that may be where I spend my money there.

i would go to the store and talk to the guitar tech and see how you feel about them. i wouldn't let the tech at my GC change my tire, let alone start twisting my truss rod. just sayin'

Chuck Levin's isn't super close for me, and my limited interactions there have been less than great. I was there once and asked a salesman if I could play a $200-odd Jay Turser. His response: "Are you gonna buy it?"

Well, no, not anymore.
I went to Music House in the Glen Burnie Mall in the 60s and they didn't want to let me try a $100 Decca 12-string; I had the money in my pocket to buy it. My friend would walk in barefoot in shredded jeans and they would gladly plug an expensive Gretsch into a Vox Super Beatle for him.

Split shaft tuners? Aside from locking tuners, they are the easiest to string.

Every day of the week you’ll be able to walk your dog over, realize it’s 90% beginner gear, and leave disappointed.

Hate 'em. I end up with very sloppy string jobs.

Crazy. They are the only ones, besides locking ones, that I can do a good job with. Do you cut them and cram the end of the string down the hole in the middle of the split?

Remember when all the guitars were in the locked glass case? Those were the days.
Because you are not worthy.

And I'll bet whenever you went into any high-end shop a store detective followed you around, you longhaired hippie!
