Guitar Center opening location a mile from my house

there is one about 3 miles from my place. i've been in there twice in the last year. so, no.....not a problem.
the only stuff in there that i'm interested in is 10 times what i could afford. and i'm not spending money on crap equipment.
the only guitars i'm interested in, GC doesn't sell anyway (Wildwood custom shop strats or maybe a Nash) and the only amp that GC sells that i would be interested in is a Fender '65 DDRI, which is $1200+, so not getting that.

so, in the end, the only time i'm really in there is to get strings or picks or something like that.
you'll be ok.

Laurel? If so, you are dangerously close to @Guitar Heel 's and Atomic Music.

I heard a commercial for the Laurel opening on the radio last weekend. I think that ups the number to 6 Guitar Centers within a stones throw of the beltway. Good strategy for a company that is barely treading water.

Yeah, Laurel.

I have been to Atomic Music many times. Sold a bunch of stuff there, never bought much.

GC's expansion in Maryland is kind of a head-scratcher. Glen Burnie, Rockville, Towson, and recently, Silver Spring and Laurel.

wow, make that 8 in the DC area.

The really odd thing about the Laurel location is they added a new building to house it, when there's empty retail space in the same outdoor mall, including a huge-ass, high-profile location that used to be a Sports Authority.

I won't shed a tear when they fold. I did get a little sad when I bought a Mogwai CD at a used CD store last week. It was brand new, in the wrapping and had a Tower Records price tag on the back. I miss Tower.

I keep meaning to check in at Guitar Center, but haven't for about a year. I tend to prefer Guitar Showcase in San Jose (a locally-owned shop) or Gryphon in Palo Alto.

There ssome other non-chain musical instrument stores around, but I tend to buy stuff online.

Atomic Music is a great used store, but the prices tend to be a bit high. It's fun to browse, but it's kind of like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Chuck Levin's isn't super close for me, and my limited interactions there have been less than great. I was there once and asked a salesman if I could play a $200-odd Jay Turser. His response: "Are you gonna buy it?"

Well, no, not anymore.

Can't be too careful with that pro-level collector stuff!!!

Yeah, Chuck's has great prices but the salesmen are old school. They have been there since the 80s or 90s back when the guitars were in a glass case along the back wall. I've never gone there to try out guitars, I would find what I wanted and then go there to buy it. But I haven't bought anything there since 93 or so.

i had a similar experience at a local used store that specialized in used gibsons and fenders. he had a used (very little) gold top classic 1960 L.P. that i had played the week before, and i asked him how much he wanted for it. his reply was "what do you care, you're not going to buy it anyway", to which i pulled out about $2000 in 100's and showed it to him and then turned and walked out of the store.
what an asshole.
