Give me something to watch on Netflix

I don't think it is narrowly focused on murder or the UK.

I think it is focusing on how the manosphere has groomed a generation of young boys in a lot of western countries (including the US) for the type of behavior seen on the show. Which is not just the murder but a lot of other stuff like kids acting out aggressively, having no empathy, their warped sense the world and masculinity, bullying, etc. In fact, that problem isn't detatched from male depression but what is exacerbating it. Manosphere tends to see depression as personal weakness that you must hide or 'man up'. Having connections with other men is 'gay' so you can't tell them. And telling a woman will lead to her manipulating your 'weakness'. There is also a fatalism like if you have 'feelings' you're not a real man to begin with so you're going to be an incel forever. So obviously this leads either murderous resentment or extreme doomerism/suicide.

Again, I enjoyed Adolescence as a work of fiction. It’s not a documentary.

I asked my son about Andrew Tate. He said,
“That guy’s an idiot. I never encountered a single person who liked or followed that moron.”

My son seems to have a pretty healthy center about diversity in human sexuality. His best friend in grade school had two moms. He has a diverse group of friends including gay, lesbian. No trans, but I think that’s just statistics (1.62% of the population). I don’t think toxic masculinity has anything to do with his depression. Apparently, he inherited depression from his Mom.

I’m going to watch some episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm with my wife. Hopefully, it will help me to center myself, and sort through any issues of race, gender, toxic masculinity, modern feminist theory, etc.

I don't think I really 'enjoyed' the show even if I understood it. I saw it more like a pretty unsubtle after school special.

At 21, he might be too old to be into him, but he has 10 million followers on Twitter. And Trump personally had him moved out of Romania back to the US to avoid a sex trafficking investigation. He has major reach in the US. Either because Barron is a fan or the president senses that he has reach with young conservative voters.

Toxic masculinity isn't causing depression itself. Depression is a complex issue. But it does prevent people from seeking therapy and forming genuine relationships when they have depression. And that's what leads to suicides, doomerism, and school shooters. Hyper individualism always sounds great to younger men, until it doesn't. When you see your problems multiply rather than be resolved. Manosphere blames feminism rather than the hyper-individualism, though. Men then double down on hyper-individualism. Then their depression worsens.

Certainly, modern feminism is not wrong about everything. But, much of what they preach these days contradicts decades of clinical research.

Not everything about about gender is a social construct. This is backed by decades of research. Not everything about masculinity is toxic. But, certainly, pimp culture is toxic.

My son seems to know more about Andrew Tate than I. He calls Tate a pimp. If that’s an accurate take, I think the feminists, you, my son, and I are all on the same page regarding Tate. Pimp masculinity is certainly toxic. That kind of masculinity is a problem.

In a wider sense, I think social media is a problem for societies. People are more isolated than ever before. And, it allows morons like Tate to shape impressionable minds.

Again, I liked the series. But, let’s not pretend fiction done in documentary style is the same as a documentary.

I finally got around to Becoming Led Zeppelin. As a fan of the band since boyhood, I enjoyed the film.

The band formed in 1968. I was 5 years old at the end of November that year. Obviously, I was too young in the beginning. My brother, 6 years my elder, started buying their albums in about 1970 with the acoustic album, LZ III. I was 7 when I started hearing them on the stereos in our home.

Unfortunately, I never got to see them live. I was a junior in high school when John Bonham died.

I did see Page in The Firm, Phoenix, AZ. I saw Plant in the Honey Drippers in Phoenix. I saw Page & Plant twice, Denver, McNichols Arena, and Red Rocks, Morrison, CO.

I feel like you for some reason feel attacked by this show.

And I honestly am not sure why or what you're saying here about feminism. Or what any of that has to do with what I said or what the show is about.

Wow, "Priscilla" is creeptastic. I mean I knew all about how young she was (my wife didn't, which is the best part), but watching it is absolutely another level.

I don’t understand why you would think I’m feeling attacked by that show. I said I liked the show. I felt compelled to watch every episode. It was interesting and had some good acting in it.

I found it strange that people here were reacting to the show as if it was a factual news story rather than a piece of fiction. Certainly, by all accounts Andrew Tate is a bad influence. But, sighting a piece of fiction as proof of his harm is an odd way to connect the dots to me.

There was just a recent story in the news. A young man brought a knife to a track meet in Texas. He stabbed and killed another young man with the knife. People are already trying to say that the influence of rap music, and rap lyrics, are the cause of this violence. We don't even know all the facts, and people are attempting to connect the dots to the evils of rap music. I doubt that will be provable, even once we know all the facts.

Modern feminism took over the toxic masculinity debate years ago. IMO much of the way this narrative gets pushed in news and fiction is toxic itself. Masculinity is not a simply a social construct. Femininity is not just a social construct. There are decades of clinical research that back up those statements.

There are multiple narratives within the fiction of the Adolescence series. One of them is that Andrew Tate is leading to toxic masculinity in young males, which causes violence against women. People have been saying a similar things about rap music, and rap lyrics, for years. Both narratives may be true, but it's a hard thing to prove, particularly, by using a piece of fiction.

I already made my point that while violence against women is a problem, self harm is a bigger problem. You made the point that toxic masculinity could be a contributing factor to suicide. Maybe, there's some truth to it. Perhaps, the suppression of natural masculinity is a contributing factor. We can conjecture. We can offer competing theories, but it's often hard to connect the dots in the real world. It's always easier to connect the dots in a work of fiction.

I don't know if we have major bones of contention here. My guess is we probably have more points of agreement. I've made my points. I'm not trying to step on anyones toes. I don't understand how a piece of fiction proves anything, but that's ok. I'm not looking for a wider debate. I'm done. On to the next piece of entertainment.

I consider anything that holds my attention for hours entertainment, even when it's psychologically jarring. Sometimes, it's like a car wreck, and I can't look away. But, I can't watch torture porn. The woman who does my wife's hair has been her lifelong friend. She loves torture porn movies. I don't get it, but she seems like a nice person in general.

Mickey 17 is a lot better than the reviews would have you believe. Gilliamesque satire, I enjoyed it.

I guess you're right. Girls and women never get murdered (though it is entertaining to think about what if). The only problems are those that affect you or your son. And it was feminists' fault all along because they are too dumb to understand clinical research that actually says misogyny is natural/innate not learned behavior.

False. That’s your hot take, not mine.

Can we get back to 'give me something to watch on Netflix '?

The lil woman and I are pretty excited about tonights White Lotus finale. It should be pretty edge of your seat entertainment. We'll be in bed.

Also on HBO, The Last Of Us premier says it's coming soon. The 1st season was great.

I just finished both Severance and Silo. Two great series that start with S. I'll be waiting with anticipation for their next season premiers.

The end of Severance let me the hell down. I am not on board with their whole "innie" as a separate entity premise -- at least to the length they're taking it. For instance, Mark is a bit of a loser in outie and innie life; the only person who showed any sort of difference in personality between innie and outie was Helly. I feel the writers painted themselves into a corner for the end of the season and their resolution is about as satisfying as the last few episodes of Game of Thrones -- you have to suspend a hell of a lot of belief to accept those twists. Overall, though, I'm a fan, so I'll be back for season 3.

I thought the ending made sense. But, it was not the ending for which I was rooting.
