Duncan's vs Dimarzio

I prefer DiMarzio but either company makes a great pickup. It just depends on what you are looking for.

I've used pickups from both with great results. My single favorite has been the Dimarzio 36th Ann. PAFs.

Sent from in my pants.

i still haven't played one. i have the Virtual PAF in my PRS and old Ibanez. at some point i'd like to get a comparison to the 36th, but those pickups sound great and see no reason to swap.

You ought to give them a try. They came stock in a BC Rich Calibre I had and it was a "holy shit" moment when I first plugged it in. They are everything people say about them. I remember liking the virtual PAF too, and I haven't used one in years, but you might be converted if you tried the 36.

TV Jones makes a PAF type pickup. Probably not the aesthetic you're looking for, but classy looking. It would look silly in the Kramer though.

Like I said, the guitars sound great as-is. No need to tinker just because.

I've had the same Demario PAF I bought in the early 80's and it sounded great in all of them. I have a new Demario PAF in my les paul it sounds pretty much the same. I would recommend their PAF series with confidence.

As far as Duncans go, I've used their hot rails and tele neck pickups and had great results.

That said, I would by either of their pickups without worry.

Just to throw an option out there; bg-pups.com has some well thought of humbuckers - maybe check them out as well.

I'm sorry.... that doesn't compute.

Where would we be if Les Paul said "ah... guitars are loud enough.

Or if Floyd Rose had said "Guitars don't go out of tune that bad when you use the trem."

Or Seth Lover saying "60 cycle hum is part of the charm of an electric guitar."

Those guys were innovating new ideas. Not swapping one minor PAF tweak for another.

sometimes the road to innovation is starting from scratch... sometimes it's tiny adjustments until something new comes into focus.

In principle, I don't disagree. But we're talking about swapping pickups here. Not fixing a technological issue like those you mentioned.

Let's compromise.

Howie, next time you get a guitar that needs a new neck pickup, will you consider giving the PAF 36 a go?

Of course. But I don't see it happening anytime soon. I've got three guitars with humbuckers and none need new pickups. I won't be buying another guitar for quite some time.

That said, I'm waiting to get my Ibanez with the AN/AT set back from the tech. He's putting a Graph Tech Ghost piezo system into it.

That is AWESOME. I hear that the ghost piezo and HEX system is pretty hard to beat. I'd love to try the hex version. I really dig synth guitar stuff, but those GK pups are slow compared to a internal system.

The GK pickup concept is cool, but I just don't dig the synth tones.

I had the Graph Tech system in another guitar. The instrument itself is a POS, so I'm taking the good part and moving on.

I've always been a Duncan guy, and I prefer low output pickups, but just bought a guitar with a tone zone in the bridge and it sounds fantastic.

I like Lawrence and Duncan's. For Duncan's I prefer 59's in both positions. I will also use a jazz in the neck position as well as it blends well with the 59. I also use the JB with is a hotter than the 59 with a midrange presence. Great for heavy rock tones but you still have some dynamic control.

I used DiMarzio's in my early years. Used to use the Super Distortion and the Super 2. I like the Super 2's better - less output and brighter sounding.
