Do you name your guitars?

Until recently the answer was a resounding "no"...

...but...

Earlier this year I was GASing very hard for a Gretsch Electromatic, but had no intention of giving in to it...on one Sunday morning, after I spent my time with the woman I'm in a non-standard relationship with I wandered into the Poughkeepsie Alto Music store...this particular morning marked my last opportunity to spend time with her before she went back home out west for a month or so and I was feeling a little down...lo and behold, there on the wall at Alto, was the object of my GAS, a walnut Electromatic, which I bought after an abbreviated try out...

I named it April after the month I bought it and the woman who inspired it...

Krashpad just wanted an excuse to flaunt his collection of spiffy old guy guitars.

I'll allow it.

Haha, I'm not sure what an old guy guitar is. Maybe it disincludes pointies, which my motley crew mostly does (with the possible exception of the Fernandes Ravelle). Also, many are in the sub-$300 category, so probably not what a lot of people would consider "spiffy." But at any rate, I hesitate to call it a "collection," because that arguably implies a lot more thought than actually went into it.

Which is not to say that no thought went into it. But I think most "collectors" have some sort of overall plan: "I have a Tele, now I'll get a Strat." Or, "I have a Les Paul, now I'll get an SG." Obviously, that's a great way to build a collection, because you focus mainly or only on your next acquisition, go after it, and tick it off the list.

Instead I have a long subconscious list of cool guitars that I have some interest in, but that I don't currently have. But I don't prioritize them or go after one specifically, in some logical sequence.

I just wait.

When some good deal happens to occur near me locally, if it's on the subconscious list, I check it out and maybe go get it, if I have the dosh available. That way I only get good deals, rather than pay whatever is necessary to get the next item on some logical list.

So, rather than logically go after specific models or types, I trust the universe to bring cool stuff to me.

The least I can do is give them names.

I thought you were gonna say you named it "Wally".... lol

Nope.

I'm not that type that names inanimate objects. To me, it would be like naming my lamps. Just seems weird. I would probably back out of the room if I ever saw someone talk to their guitar.

No, with two exceptions that were born from a joke.

After I finished doing all the mods and upgrades to it, including completely replacing the hardware with black parts, and painting the back of the neck black, I took my Black strat to rehearsal and the other guitarist said "damn! That's a whole lot of black! Whadduhya call that thing?"

I just blurted out "The Black Strat of Doom", and it stuck. At that time I had it configured as an H/S/S setup so I only used it for Humbucker stuff.

When I switched over to it's aesthetically opposite, my white strat, he asked what I would call that one in response to the the black one... "It's The White Strat of Chimey Goodness!" Was my reply since it was S/S/S.

Both names just stuck. After a while it just became habit to refer to them that way.
I have a generic European-style commuter bike which I named the Black Bicycle of Death, as a joke, because it's so tremendously proper. I even ordered lettering, with the full name on one side and BBOD on the other. Rode it to work every day. :)

I'm too lazy to name my guitars. I don't really think it's creepy; creepy is when you refer to your guitars as "she" or "her."

I refer to the Les Paul Custom my wife bought for me as "the fancy one" or "the really nice one". my blue strat plus is "the blue strat". the rest are just referred to by their make and/or model. very creative.

I never do,but my ex always called my Les Paul Custom as my wife.
I had that guitar for over 20 years.
I never should have sold it.
