As for "hearing the comparisons" to Dylan, I thought I was being clear that the comparisons are lazy. Any baritone who speaksings is going to get that comparison. Any. Even Lloyd Cole, who may adore Bob Dylan, but certainly does not sound like him.

Ummm, I remember the first time I heard Sultans on the radio when it first came out and had exactly the same reaction. Wow Dylan with some great guitar player. You can theorize, but it was a widespread reaction by regular everyday music listeners when that song hit the airwaves. No critics or reviews, just organic association that was out of people's control.

and furthermore this was a point in time, in rock history, when Dylan sounded completely different from album to album. Nashville Skyline sounded nothing vocally like Highway 61 and the live Before the Flood album Dylan sounded completely different again. Yes he always sounded like Dylan, but so different every album that hearing Knopler for the first time and thinking it was Dylan was no stretch at all. Dire Straits first album came out between Blood On the Tracks and maybe Slow Train Coming which Knopler played on. I may be missing a couple of albums there, but those are two completely different sounding albums in every way. Dylan's voice was a constantly moving target back then. Remember the We Are The World story where Dylan didn't know how to sing it and Stevie Wonder had to sing it for him "Dylan" style.

Knopfler also has a couple of Dylan’s vocal ticks like pitching up on last syllable of a line, especially if it’s an ‘s.’

Actually, I think ABQ/northern NM has sophistication. Just not exactly Echo Park / Silverlake, or PDX, for which we need to be profoundly grateful.
