Concerts - Favorite of 2016 and Looking Forward To 2017

So, unabashed DMB fan. Love them, but they are just one among a long list of many bands/artists that I love. They are, however, my wife's favorite band. So on Mother's Day I got her two lawn seats for night two at SPAC, while for her birthday (coming up at the end of June) I got her two actual seats for night one at SPAC. So two Dave and Tim shows back-to-back Fri o6/16 and Sat 06/17.

We saw them during our trip to Ireland, but despite a near three hour no intermission show they can only play so many of the songs we love. But back to back in the same venue, they won't repeat a single song. It'll be close to 60 songs...very much looking forward to it.

I saw them last year and I have to admit, Mayer does do a good job in that role

Yeah, I only saw live clips and he's fitting in nicely.

That said, he's always been a very good guitar player. Was he is not a particularly original guitar player. While Trey was playing in his style using Jerry's melodic concepts, John is mainly just reeling off Jerry's licks, with some of his SRV-isms. I get that it's kind of funny referring to SRV-isms given how much Stevie wore his influences on his sleeve, but it's appropriate.

Further that saiding...John is playing extraordinarily well in the only mostly complete version of the dead available with the main voice of the band. He's helping the legacy live on, growing their audience to a certain extent, and honoring the band and its music. I've got no use for his music, but I think this is a cool gig and does right by it.

I think he has started really adding his own flavor to the songs while still working within Jerry's favorite scales. I watched some from the first 2 tours, and he seemed to be copping many of Jerrys licks back then. He seems to now be playing from the heart while channeling Jerry, which is very different than simply aping JG. I am excited for the show, but my wife is especially excited. She has 176 GD shows already (to my 2) so this really means a lot to her. Our oldest son was born the day Jerry died, so there are a lot of emotions coming to the surface leading up to this show.

Was going to see Chris Stapleton in a few weeks, but the tour is postponed. Next show I'm headed to is Isbell on July 1st.

Great show last night. I decided to pick up this poster at the swag table:

cross post from political thread...

I had a wonderful vacation away from all the hate in the world this weekend. While some performers feel the need to ram their activism down your throat ( Waters/Bono, et al), it was so nice to be in a crowd that didn't need to be preached at. We were living it. People talk about 'feeling the love', but that is exactly how it was. The crowd was joyous, and everyone around us became instant friends, like we had known them all our lives and came together to the show. There was no mention of Trump. No negativity at all. We met people from Belgium, Canada, and from various parts of the country who flew in to share the evening and soak up the sunshine, figurative and literal. When making our way through the packed crowd, our path just opened up and people passed us through, hands placed on our shoulders like old friends, exchanging occasional hugs from strangers as we went. Everyone, and I mean everyone was dancing non stop. It was absolutely magical. Only hours after friend and bandmate Gregg Allman was laid to rest, Oteil Burbridge made his vocal debut with a haunting, beautiful rendition of China Doll, bringing many in the crowd to tears.

If you need a break from all the bullshit going on in this fucked up world, I cannot recommend seeing Dead & Co more highly. It will restore your faith in people.

Oh, and John Mayer absolutely killed it.

My favorite concert of 2016 was The Specials at the Warfield in 'Frisco.

Seeing George Thorogood at Villa Montalvo (in the Santa Cruz mtns) on September 20. I've never had the opportunity to see him before, and am really looking forward to it. The venue is fantastic, too. Saw Joe Jackson there a couple of years ago, and it's a really intimate, comfortable place to see a show.

Just noticed Gene Ween has a weird tour going on...Gene Ween does Billy Joel. Also at the Birchmere and only $20...might be fun.

Also Matthew Sweet in September...another tempting show.

Toad the Wet Sprocket are playing the Birchmere late July...the wife and I are going to that as well.

Didn't know that. I am planning on going to the Matthew Sweet show and am thinking about going to the Old 97s show. Maybe I'll hit the Toad show too. I haven't seen them since their tour with Big Head Todd and the Monsters close to 10 years ago.

Donovan also kept it (mostly) non-political. He did sing Universal Soldier but did not add any commentary to it, and it was a song he was known for singing.

Sadly, Dead and Company are playing at Fenway Park and I will not fight the traffic or the weather to see them. I'm too old for that stuff.

Bobby kind of lets the setlist do his talking.

Bummer about not seeing them at Fenway. I would say it would be worth it, because it would be, but I understand.

we are opening for saliva on friday. its my bday. going to be fun.

i dont get to see a lot of concerts anymore. with 2 young kids the only time i leave the house is band practice and our shows.

i wish i could see dead and co but i just don't think i could make it through the show. my best friend passed away in jan. he was a huge deadhead, we saw 3 shows together last tour. i miss him so much going to see them right now would be too tough.

Yeah, the wife and I were super upset to miss the TWS and BTHM tour. Glen Phillips is one of my favorite singer songwriters and Toad is just a great band...not a bad album in their catalog (for me anyway). Another concert season hits me with so many wants, but with so little available cash. When I'm flush, the pickings are slim...when the wallet is slim the options are mouth watering.
