Clip-on vs. Pedal Tuners

Here's where mine lives when I'm not actually using it.

When I use a clip-on tuner, it lives on a nearby table along with my capo when they are not in use. Sometimes the capo goes in my pants pocket; the Shubb fits nicely like that.
 
If I am using my pedal board I will utilize my TU-2 otherwise it's the Snark.

I don't like to leave it on either. I will usually place it on the top of my amp until it is called into action.

For the last couple years, I've used a clip-on tuner I get off of Ebay (@ $5, per!), probably made in the same Chinese factory that makes Snarks. Bought 2, at first, but when both still worked fine after 13 months, I bought one for each stringed instrument (quite a few), and the tuner stays on the peghead, even in the case...button-batteries in these suckers last a very long time, too!

Pretty convenient, even when doing a little un-plugged jamming.

Not me...Always have a tuner on my Tele, occasionally use a capo on it, and am seriously digging the Bigsby I put on my Epi SG Special, so am thinking my Tele needs one, as well...

I use both types-contact and stomp.

Waaaay back when I actually played with people all I had was a contact tuner. It was hard to tune when others in the band were noodling around on their instruments when I tried to tune. The tuner would get confused and had a hard time separating the notes it heard/felt. I had to be the ass who kept asking the others to stop for a minute while I tuned.

Do newer clip ons cancel out external "noise" better these days?

I recently bought a Boss pedal tuner when I feared the contact tuner may scuff my new Strat's finish.

My Sabine tuner just spends its whole life on my acoustics now.

Also I really need to get back to playing with other people soon. I miss that.
 
I use clip-ons before the gig, but pedals during. The problem with clip-ons is that they're susceptible to vibrations from your bass player or even drummer, or other noise on stage.
 
I found that venue noise (patrons engaged in coversation) affected clip-on tuners so, though I prefer them, I would choose a pedal for the live show. I always use the clip-on at home.
 
Id use my floor unit if Im gonna have a pedalboard anyway. I play a lot straight to amp or all acoustic so its usually a clip on. The upright wears an old Intellitouch clamped on the bridge. I don't think anybody other than another upright player would notice it. Plus theres already a pickup attached to it. I dont mind keeping a discrete one clipped to an acoustic. My bright blue Snark works great but I don't want it on my headstock duing a performance.

I like wrap around type capos like the Paige or McKinny. On some guitars you can secure them just above the nut, real handy. Shubbs are good but I've lost em out of my pocket, or forgot where I laid em down. The spring loaded ones you can clap on the headstock only seem to work decently on some guitars and not others.
 
I'm back to using the Eventide Pitchfactor and it has a built in tuner. So I'm going to use that while it's on the board.
 
I own both, but the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner is FAR more accurate than my clip on tuner. I could get a Peterson clip on strobe, but then I wouldn't have anyplace to keep my capo. :grin:
