Can we discuss Van Hagar reasonably?

So your love for Van Halen and White snake must be your "time to change your batteries" reminder.

I'm actually not a huge Whitesnake fan. I like some of their stuff, and think that they've had some guitar guitarists through the years, but I can really take or leave most of their stuff.

Van Halen is probably my favorite band though. :embarrassed:

Noone's perfect.

I don't think this is Eddie playing the bass line. Eddie did the bass on Sammy's "I Never Said Goodbye" album, and his style definitely transferred over to the bass.

This is just a good solid groovey bass line with a few nice riffs in it. Doesn't sound like Eddie to me, though I could be wrong.

He didn't actually play too many of them, but he dictated the parts to Mike to a degree on a lot of songs. This is what I want - this kind of feel, etc. Ed only recorded a few tracks in the middle of the Van Hagar era when Michael simply could not play some of the parts...

I listened to a lot of Van Halen in middle school until I realized that I listened to it because I felt like I needed to as a guitar player, rather than actually liking the music. I appreciate what EVH has done (hell the 5150 is one of my favourite metal amps ever :rawk: ) but I find the music boring and incredibly over-indulgent.

VH was all about over-indulgent and being plain old fun. That's sorta the point :embarrassed: Van Hagar got too serious but with DLR it was all about the excess. P.S. the 5150 wont do early brown sound.

I loathe the brown sound. It's brown because it sounds like shit. :embarrassed:

There's another side to everything
Connected like the ring around your finger
And I know this like I know myself
Not very well, yet I'm no stranger

But it won't be long
I see both brains now

So that's what we're going to get from Zombie Hagar? Churning up 4 year old threads about Hagar?

Will someone please give him a shot of tequila... and then a shot to the forehead? :helper:

I love it all, but some of the tones on 5150 and OU812 are the antithesis of the Roth era tones. It sounded like he was trying to play through James Hetfield's rig on some songs, but on other songs there was the classic EVH tone.

They really were two different bands. DLR era was all fun party stuff. The songs and production were usually pretty barebones, and the focus was really on EVH's riffs. With Sammy, the songs got more complex arrangements and the production got slick and glossy. There were also a more 'serious' songs than with DLR.

This is why I prefer DLR era. I almost always prefer bands before some producer gets ahold of them and makes them all glossy. U2 is another example. I songs from their whole career, but the earlier "War" and "Boy" and "Live at Red Rocks" stuff is my favorite. I can handle a few Hagar era songs, but not too many. And I don't seek them out. I did not like Hagar that much when he was on his own either. So there is that.

So hopefully it is considered reasonable to say that I no longer always run away screaming when a DHH song comes on, and some are even pretty fun. But I like the older stuff way better.

I started "listening" to them when they came on the radio as a kid. I took real notice when 1984 broke them on a HUGE scale (seeing their vids on MTV). The first album I bought was 5150 and my favorite album is OU812. That said, I rarely listen to them any longer.

This thread as an incredible success regardless of age. You all did discuss the version of VH very reasonably. This never would have happened on HC.

Of course, the songs were sometimes terribly cheesey, but even the DLR songs were cheesey...but they didn't try to disguise themselves as serious songs with DLR.

I completely agree Prages. I like both bands though I am not a fanatic and I only own one VH album (Diver Down). I was never a hero worshipper of EVH so when the band changed it was more ..oh they have a new singer that guy that does Bad Motor Scooter ...that might be cool. But I assumed that EVH would still be doing this thing which was the most interesting thing about the band to me anyways even though I did not play guitar then.

Oh he'll where do I start on this one. I am truly a fan if both. Though admittedly Van Hagar is what got me listening to it. The singer isn't what got me into it though. I can't say I like one any better than the other. But the Dave stuff is more rocking for sure.

But drop dead legs off if 84 is one of my favorite tunes of all time.
I can't pick just one

just realized this is an old thread to

I don't really get the "over indulgent" comments about Van Halen, at least as I understand "over indulgent" to mean. Van Halen was mostly three minute songs with guitar solo's lasting around 20 seconds, sometimes less. EVH is one of the least over indulgent rock guitar players by my book. Led Zeppelin doing 45 minutes of "Dazed and Confused" is over indulgent.

Van Hagar's songs are mostly (with a few exceptions) pap.

By overindulgent I think they mean songs about drinking and women. LOL
