Can we discuss Van Hagar reasonably?

Two different bands really, can't compare them IMO. Plus I don't have enough of Hagar to judge properly.

I will say I liked DLR's voice better. Sammy gets annoying after a while.

Updated. :helper:

I'm glad to see some dissent in this thread, I would have been terribly disappointed had there not been :embarrassed:

Wait.

Kerouac. And Dexter.

Agree.

That Van Hagar is better than the Roth years.

I'm going back to bed.

I can almost guarantee I'll like your version better than the original

My version is actually almost spot on with the original...it's just my voice instead of DLR's, but even so, I sang it kind of like him too. :embarrassed:

I'm pretty proud of it, especially considering the fact that I think I pulled off Eddie's tone and feel pretty respectably.

And what's shocking is that when I sat down to learn the bass line, which I thought would be about a 30 second project, I discovered that Michael Anthony was actually doing some pretty nice stuff in there. The bass line was actually almost as challenging as the guitar part.

FWIW, I knew I wanted to do something off of VHI for this recordingfest, but I didn't want to do Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, and other than that one, the one I did was the only one on the album that I could pull the drums off to.

Well, to be honest I greatly prefer your singing to DLR. :)

All I know is that this is wrong on so many levels.

Well - half the time Eddie wrote the bass lines and sometimes even had to play them himself on the studio recording. Michael is a solid bass player, but is no maestro on the instrument.

I don't think this is Eddie playing the bass line. Eddie did the bass on Sammy's "I Never Said Goodbye" album, and his style definitely transferred over to the bass.

This is just a good solid groovey bass line with a few nice riffs in it. Doesn't sound like Eddie to me, though I could be wrong.

It wasn't that bad. It's no worse than DLR tackling Poundcake. This is one of the reasons Sammy didn't want to do too much DLR stuff - they just have very different singing styles. That was actually a calculated risk VH took when they hired Sammy and it paid off. They could have found a DLR clone and continued the same path (ala Journey), but instead they hired Sammy and reinvented themselves with some often great results.
