Can we discuss Van Hagar reasonably?

I like Sammy more than I like Dave, but I'm a girl and I like the sappy ballads. Sammy I think definitely brought in more of the softer and more melodic stuff than Dave did. I think this brought a lot more of the womens to the shows.

Dave is a great rocker and a great show man, he just plays better to the men folks. He lusts after women and is more repulsive to me then Sammy is, I just find him very hard to watch.

Not to say Sammy doesn't have his moments of vulgarity. He just sings stuff in a way that is more appealing to me than does Dave. I have seen them both. Dave does put on a great show. I think I will just always be more partial the Van Hagar Era.

After 1984. Van Halen was dead to me......:embarrassed:

Actually, I liked some of the tracks..... Finish what you started was sweet.

Hagar changed the band. They went from good time rock and roll to a pop hit machine. Nothing wrong with that. I prefer the Dave material, but I like plenty of songs from the later years. I also saw them in '88 (I think) with Sammy, and they put on a great show.

I like versions 1.0 & 2.0 of VH. I tend to think of them as different bands, so I take each lineup for what it is (was) rather than comparing the two.

Van Hagar is actually what got me into Van Halen. It was seeing the Live Without a Net concert video that did it for me. After that, I bought all the DLR albums, then picked up all the Sammy albums as they came out.

I even have VHIII.

They really were two different bands. DLR era was all fun party stuff. The songs and production were usually pretty barebones, and the focus was really on EVH's riffs. With Sammy, the songs got more complex arrangements and the production got slick and glossy. There were also a more 'serious' songs than with DLR. Of course, the songs were sometimes terribly cheesey, but even the DLR songs were cheesey...but they didn't try to disguise themselves as serious songs with DLR.

The DLR era is my favorite for sure, but I still like a bunch of Sammy's stuff with them.

I'll pick a favorite off of each album. :embarrassed:

VHI: Feel Your Love Tonight
VHII: Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Women and Children First: Romeo's Delight
Fair Warning: Mean Street
Diver Down: Little Guitars
1984: Drop Dead Legs
5150: Summer Nights
OU812: Finish What Ya Started (followed closely by Cabo Wabo)
F.U.C.K.: Poundcake
Balance: Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)
Best of Volume I: Humans Being
VHIII: Without You
Best of Both Worlds: Learning To See

Of course, for Best of and Best of Both Worlds, I only picked my favorite of the new songs.

You guys have your Star Wars geekdom...I've got my Van Halen geekdom. :embarrassed:

I was disappointed by "5150"..didn't really like the sound, or the songs that much.."Summer Nights" was ok though..but I really loved "OU812"...that record has a very unique feel I think..it really sounds like a band enjoying themselves and they somehow managed to capture that on tape. I quite liked "F.U.C.K".."Poundcake" is just a great rock song...couldn't get into "Balance", but did buy VHIII ..which is in contention for the worst rock record I've got.

No question for me that Hagar is the "better" singer..but it was the chemistry of the original band that made them great imo.

This is pretty much my take.

The DLR era is good fun rock and roll party music.

The Sammy era was more serious (at times) and more pop oriented, but they also put out more complex music at the same time.

I liked both versions.

I like both, and slightly prefer Hagar, even if my favorite VH song is "So This is Love"
