Can we appreciate the triumph of Triumph as a group experience?

I am not a huge fan, but I never got why they were not more popular than they were. The songs were not masterpieces to be sure, but so were the songs performed by a whole lot of bands that gained more popularity than they did. There was just something missing....

Triumph definitely podiums the list of all time best three man Canadian rock bands.

For what it's worth, there are only three, three man Canadian rock bands.
I have them edging out Santers for second.

Rik Emmet was my first real guitar hero. Good gods the man can play.

My first concert was Triumph, on the Never Surrender tour in Cincinnati March 4th, 1983 - so two months before the famous Us Festival appearance.. Blew my 14 year old mind. It kicked off a love of concerts that shows no sign of waning. Great guitar playing, great stage presence, great showmanship, pyro, lasers....it was a phenomenal first show. Molly Hatchet was opening that leg of that tour, and that was a pretty damn good opening band for my first show.

I'm still bummed that that was the only time I got to see Triumph. However, March 83 was a good month for me, because March 30 I saw Rush for the first time. It was a helluva good first 2 concerts.

Anyway, 39 years later, I still love me some Triumph. Yeah, in retrospect, the lyrics are on the cheesy side, but I love them anyway. Mrs Aahzz has a different opinion.

I have to add - while their lyrics were indeed on the cheesy side, I always appreciated the fact that their lyrics were, for the most part, very positive. Hold On, Never Surrender, Magic Power, Just a Game...it's very hard to maintain a bad mood when listening.

Music holds the secret,
To know it can make you whole
It's not just a game of notes,
It's the sounds inside your soul
The magic of the melody
Runs through you like a stream
The notes that play flow through your head
Like a dream
(Like a dream)
Like a dream
I sing this song for the common man
For the people in despair
I bring my song into the world
And I sing it everywhere
The simple truth lies waiting here
For everyone to share
So hold on, and I will take you there
Hold on and I will take you there
The daily routine takes your soul,
Lost without a trace
It hold you down and turns you 'round
And puts you in your place
Another day, another dollar
Another pretty face
Another chance to lose yourself
In the endless race
Hold on, hold on to your dreams
Hold on, even though it seems
Everyone around you has their little schemes
Listen to your heart and hold on to your dreams
Can't you feel the magic
Feel it everywhere
Can't you hear the music
There's something in the air
There's a celebration
Deep within a song
Celebrate this feeling,
You know it can't be wrong
Caught up in routine,
You got to break it
Time won't wait for us,
We got to make it
Fate gives you the chance
You've got to take it
Take it
Hold on

I know the name, and know Rick Emmet was the guitar player but have no musical file on them. Just clicked on their top 3 hits and none ring a bell.

Speaking of Rik Emmett, he is a lefty who learned to play right-handed because he couldn't find any left-handed guitars.

Being a righty myself, I cant even imagine trying to play left-handed and being any good at it :undecided:

I am 51. They never made it to the DC market apparently. I asked my neighbor (who is also 51) and he knows of them, but couldn't name a song.

I was going to post a similar response. I had Heart, REO, and Foghat on my list.

This should ring a bell

My buddy and I found them at a restaurant before their show in our town and completely crashed their table in the middle of their meal, when we were 16. The bassist got testy with us, but Rik told us to wait and come back over when they were done. We order a couple of sodas and sat at the bar. The bassist came over and apologized saying that it gets annoying when people do that to which we apologized profusely and he signed an autograph and told us we could head over and then left. The other two sat us down and talked to us for a minute or two and paid for our drinks. We didn't have the money to go to the show and didn't tell them, but they signed autographs and gave us time at their table which was a hell of a thing. Real nice guys.

This is my favorite Triumph.

Doesn’t ring at all. And I’m one of those people who remembers almost any song I’ve ever heard.
When I got a record player a while back, I went through and listened to all these old records I had. Found this record by a band called Fools Gold. It was my uncles and didn’t think I’d ever heard of them. Put on the record and knew every song. It had been at least 40 years since I’ve heard it, but I knew it all. These Triumph songs don’t click at all with me.
