Choose one. For purposes of this discussion, only pre-reunion Dino Jr. counts. Unless we want to get into considering Preston School of Industry records as alternative Pavement canon.

Dinosaur Jr by a mile for me. I don't dislike Pavement, but J and they guys were in heavy rotation for me in college.

Mascis is a good player, but he’s written three total songs despite releasing 300 albums. Pavement made better and more varied records over their run.

Love them both, but Pavement for me was more interesting. Also, I saw Pavement way more times...although the last show I saw before lockdown was J. Mascis opening for Kurt Vile up in Providence, RI.

I missed out on grunge entirely, so I subsequently never explored the headwaters/tributaries. I always had a hard time making sense of anything sludgy, so Pavement was more interesting to me, once I revisited the era a decade later.

Grunge? Did you mean to post this in the STP thread?

Are they not forefathers and offshoots of grunge? I'm pretty sure I adequately confessed my ignorance, but it is my understanding that both of these bands got mainstream attention as a result of being swept up in the grunge/alternative airstream.

I think most people would argue while there's some overlap between grunge and alternative rock, they're not the same thing and draw from different influences....as much as there's overlap in any rock category driven by distorted guitars, I suppose.

I never liked Dino Jr but I didn't listen to pavement much either.

Mascis started promoting some local boston band a few years back. They were awful and didn't deserve the publicity he threw their way. It was creepy watching gross J Mascis parading around with the two very young female members. Never cared for that dude or his playing.

Dino for me altrhough i really dig Pavement too but J. is still making great records whereas not so much for Pavement. This is a tough one though unlike the STP Pumpkins one. Also back in the day I was super into Dino in the 92-95. I didn't really get into Pavement until the late 90's even though I did own Crooked back when it came out but it just didn't click with me then.
