Joe Pa to Retire

What? He never said he didn't know. Did you read the story? He was informed of the incident. Removed the guy from his duties with the team and reported him to his athletic director per university policy. The only thing he didn't t do was call the cops himself. What exactly should he be charged with? He and the graduate assistant that witnessed it went to the boys parents and informed them. What else should be do? Are you saying every employer is responsible for every action of their employees? I can only go on media reports but I'm not seeing anything out of line with his actions.

So in other words, he was just following orders.........

When you have knowledge of such horrendous acts being committed and the people you report it to do nothing, It's your obligation to take it further IMO.

I read the indictment and feel the ball was dropped at every level... Knowing what he knew when he knew it and let it go on for years afterwards is pathetic. OGG hit it on the head.

Read it yourself

Any one of us who claims to "know" the entire story is forgetting that we were not there nor do we know anyone who was there. I agree with Ron that the ball was dropped on several levels for sure. I also agree that calling Joe a deplorable shitbag of a human being may be a bit harsh considering none of us were there to know exactly what transpired. It is entirely possible that he believed that once he reported the situation, it was being handled properly. Not saying that is the case, just saying it is possible. If your bosses tell you it will be handled appropriately, you tend to expect that it will. It is also possible that he knew it wasnt being handled as well as it should be and there is no excuse for not asking why. It is also possible that he did.

Either way, in the list of shitbags, Joe is not the king of all shitbags in this case. If he knew more than I think he did and could have stopped it, I would move him high up the shitbag list but I think the guy gave his live to doing things right so I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt until I know more truth.

And it is ok for us to disagree but let's keep it civil.

If he knew and did not call the police, he broke the law. The law does not give you the option of just telling your boss.

Fucking FACT!

While he may not be "The biggest Shitbag in the list", the fact that at the VERY LEAST, he did not pursue the issue further once he was notified makes him a deplorable shitbag nonetheless.

The Grand Jury Indictment cited above should be more than enough for any reasonable person to understand that this was an outrageous case of avoidance and suppression on the part of ALL involved.

Set your "fandom" aside for a moment and ask yourself if you would simply stop at telling your boss if the child in question was your own or that of someone you know.

This is not a matter of betraying the notion that a person is innocent until proven guilty by any stretch. It's a matter of accountability.

The indictment goes on from "Victim 1", all the way to "Victim 8", and keep in mind, this is all AFTER the separate 1998 incident.

Had the people with knowledge of potentially "inappropriate" conduct done their due diligence from the start. There would be no "Victims 2-8".

Yes it does. I'm not saying it's right, but your under no obligation to report every crime you see.

The only reason I brought it up in the first place was because I thought it was sad to see him leave under those circumstances. I'm also no Penn State fan or a Joe Pa fan, but I am a football fan. I know that when I worked for One of the big three, I would not be allowed to report that type of incident without being terminated. I would have to report it to my supervisor who would report it to the appropriate higher ups and it would be handled by the legal dept. That's how those types of organizations work.

Last week one of my wives employees was caught on video molesting a kid at the public library. When she saw it on the news she called the police to identify him and called corporate. They told her not to make any statements to the media or she would be fired. They sent some guy from their legal team up here and he handled everything else.

I just don't think we know enough of the inside baseball type stuff to really say who is guilty of what. The one thing I do know is I don't want to be held responsible for the actions of my employees when they are not on the clock and I am no where around.

I think this is a good example of removing "fandom" and emotion. This is all fact. I was involved in a similar situation wherein I was called by the press about someone who worked for me as an independent contractor. I immediately when to the "bosses" office and we met about the situation. At that time, the administration told me they would handle it from there and they appreciated me bringing it to them. From that time on, I was never allowed to know the identity of the kid. I was not allowed to know anything really. Once that type of thing gets with the authorities, everything becomes very sealed. That is why I say that if they reported it and were led to believe it was being handled, there really would be no reason to doubt it and it would be very difficult to know how it was progressing because the information is kept confidential. I found out at some point who the kid was, or at least I think I did. I was told by someone who told someone. The official information was not released.

If everything we have read is true and the bosses didnt take it to authorities, then they intentionally broke the law. The grad assistant and Joe didnt break a law. It may also be true that they knew more about the progress and didnt press the issue. I dont know and neither does anyone else in this thread. That's all I am saying.

Child abuse laws are very specific. If you are aware it's happening and don't report it to the police, you've broken the law.
I work with children and the disabled every day. The laws concerning their protection don't leave any wiggle room.

Well I have no idea about child abuse. Obviously it is something I would report to police, which he did do, but I'm not going to call them every other day to make sure the cops handle it correctly. I know one thing, if I was required to report every crime I saw, it would take three days to drive through Detroit.

There's a story in the news right now about a mental health worker who was fired for reporting suspected child porn on a client's computer because it violated medical confidientality.

Not the same as the issue regarding Paterno, I know, but there it is.

So, basically, some of you are saying that there's nothing at all hinky about the fact that every now and then over the last NINE years... Joe Paterno (and the others) could have found themselves sitting in their office and thinking "Gee, I wonder what ever happened with that whole Sandusky raping kids in the shower thing?"

Sorry, it just doesn't add up.

Especially when you consider that now, in his own words, he did not do enough and has decided to take this opportunity to retire.

Im saying I dont have enough info to make a judgement either way.

Oh it's plenty hinky. Especially damning is that he allowed Sandusky to continue to use the facilities even after he left the program.

you do know that in 1998 the then prosecutor decided not to prosecute Sandusky right? There is way to much in this case for me to condemn Joe. We will never know what he knew and we probably will never know if or how often he followed up with the school on Sandusky. If more facts come out, then I am open to change my mind, but I still stand on innocent until proven guilty. I think all of the victims coming forward has made up my mind that Sandusky is guilty as hell and I hop he lives a very long life in the state pen.
