Joe Pa to Retire

I've followed Penn State football for as long as I can remember. I wanted to go to PSU as well but didn't have the grades to go to Main Campus. I now work at PSU and it's really a sad state of affairs here now. The administration and the coaching staff all dropped the ball on this one. The actions of a certain few have tarnished...more like destroyed...the reputation of the institution that me and thousands of faculty, staff, students and alumi have been proud of for so many years. The really disturbing part is there is very little mention of the kids that were sexually abused. They are the real victims here...not Joe or the PSU leaders. They will be fine in the end, the kids however will have a whole lifetime to deal with what was done to them and that's a disgrace. This needs to be fixed, and fixed fast. Letting Joe go is the first step. Spanier and the rest of the administration need to go as well. The University also needs to publicly apologize to the children and the families affected by this and offer up as much support as they can. The damage is done and it will take years to repair. We are going to have to live with the "Pedo State U" comments for a long time but that's the price we have to pay for an administration that screwed up big time. All I want is for justice to be served and for people to be put in place that will do the right thing.

Child abuse laws are very specific. If you are aware it's happening and don't report it to the police, you've broken the law.
I work with children and the disabled every day. The laws concerning their protection don't leave any wiggle room.

Under pa state law, paterno satisfied his legal obligation by reporting it to the AD.

The beatings will continue until the moral improves.

I didnt think so at first but now I think it is probably best for a number of reasons. Obviously, if the worst is true it needed to happen. But either way, it takes the focus off of Joe quicker which is probably better for the University, for Joe, and for the kids. The media wants to have their villain and Joe as the villain sells more papers. And the University needed to do something to show they were taking it serious. The full truth about what Joe knew and what he may or may not have done will eventually come out and then everyone gets to form their opinions again at that point.

And like GergS said, the victims are those kids and I am not sure making a media event out of this is best for them. They have already been let down by a man they thought they could trust, an administration that appears to have placed the school reputation above their well being, and a justice system that failed to prosecute the guy when they had him early on. I know my energy is better spent trying to look out for my kid, the thousands of kids in my programs and kids in general.

Fwiw, none of the media in-state are portraying Paterno as a villain in this situation ....at least none of the credible sources that I have seen or read so far
