I haven't seen this particular cinematic masterwork, but looking over a plot summary, I think maybe it's actually a subtle, sophisticated commentary on the self-harm that is human-driven climate change, hence the whole endangered species thing.

I went to see it in the movie theatre with my wife and her sister. Later that night my sister-in-law was telling someone else about what we just watched and she said 'so, Bruce Willis was living on another planet, and then they sent him to Earth...' and my wife and I were like 'what the fuck? How did you get it so wrong?'
