Let’s Get Obtuse!
Got a conference coming up, but I should have some free evenings and at least one full day of personal time. What sites to see and things to do? I know Jim Croce’s restaurant is no more so I can’t get the @smurfco burnt airplane burger.

he was in Fresno (FresYes!) the last I knew

I don't really have any SD recommendations, I was always a little strangely weirded out by it when I lived in socal

I’ll be there for a way less fun Con, so even if ComicCon is happening at the same time I’ll probably be conferenced out. The zoo is on my list as sort of a default thing to do if I don’t figure out something that seems amazingly more interesting.

@dmn23 — I’m staying near the convention center and then in the general Gaslamp area for one night so I’ll definitely do some hanging around there.
 
Go to La Jolla and take in the sights there. It is one of the most beautiful sections of coastline you will ever see. If you have the appropriate transportation and the time you can also head up to Julian and get some pie at Mom's Apple Pie. The Zoo is cool, but the San Diego Safari Park about 30 miles north of downtown is a better experience IMO as the animals have larger enclosures that let the roam around (at least for the non-predators).

For nightlife, The Gaslamp is pretty much it.

Definitely catch the Midway tour. Totally worth it.

La Jolla is definitely a nice spot. If you really want to treat yourself, have a sunset dinner at The Marine Room. Can't get much closer to the water than that.

I'll second everything TomcatMF said (except maybe Julian--too far a drive for apple pie). Also, if you're a craft beer guy, there's a shit-ton of breweries to check out. The biggies are, of course, Stone and Ballast Point, but there's a million more. My fave is Societe.
 
Take the drive up north. Stop at La Jolla. Continue north to Del Mar. Grab some grilled fish tacos along the way. If you have the time, continue north along the coast. It's a beautiful drive. If you haven't selected your hotel yet, you want either the Marriott or the Sheraton with a harbor view.
 
I'll add another endorsement for heading up to La Jolla. It's a 15-20 minute drive from downtown, no biggie at all, and it's gorgeous.
