NGD. I bought the wrong guitar again.

Still too spikey and shrill?
If so not surprised. Most bridge pickups are that way for me. I tend to spend 90% of my time in the middle or front on most all my guitars. Even gave away my cheapie parts Esquire build because I just couldn’t deal w no neck or middle position. No desire for a 1 pickup Jr for that very reason.
Maybe it’s just not the guitar for that cutting bridge solo? Maybe it’s for that sweet middle position soul music, or some gutsy neck blues?

I use bridge pickups quite a bit, but they need to be kind of beefy sounding. Believe it or not, my tele has a great and fat sounding single coil bridge pickup that I love.

What do the heights on the adjustable poles look like? Try balancing it so that the poles closer to the bridge are lower. I know that's a PITA because of the split design and may involve futzing with the height of the whole pickup as well.

ok...I shot a bunch of video today with the new pickups. I hated all of it and after a little research and some advice in this thread I tried playing with the pole pieces just before I started teaching and I think I might be on to something.
 
Hopefully adjusting the polepieces will fix it.

Soundwise, how do the new wide-range pickups compare to the stock lookalikes that came in the guitar?

They are not that different, to be honest. You'll hear a side by side comparison in the video I'm working on this week.

An original would have had two identical pickups, the equivalent of using two neck PUs. I wonder if over-winding a wide-range may have been just a bit too much since they are bright to begin with.

I didn't realize that. The 500k pots put the neck pickup in a pretty good place. The bridge pickup is (as you can see) still a work in progress.

I always find myself fussing with pole pieces and pickup heights on HBs and mini-buckers way more than singles. I suspect it’s just tweakier frequencies or a tendency for icky sounds to stand out.

Yeah. It felt really gross in the room. I'm much happier with it now although I'm still not in love with the sound.

It's definitely different than your usual sound. You've usually got a fatter thing going on, even with your Strat. It might be one of those guitars that's good for certain things but not a general use workhorse.
