I would have loved to have seen the Elektric Band. I saw the Return to Forever reunion, but have never seen Frank live. He seems like a really nice guy, and he is an incredible player. I did a somewhat stiff cover of his tune Passages to one of his backing tracks a few years ago, and was working on another one of his tunes, Thunder Current, when my tendonitis flared up. I hope to get to see him some time in the future.Trivia note: I left work a little early and drove 4 hours to see Frank Gambale and John Patitucci with Chick Korea down in I.U. Bloomington.... stayed after the show and Frank was kind enough to answer several of my questions regarding his gear and I got to hold and noodle that (then prototype) yellow guitar that became his signature model.
There were quite a few interesting details like the way the pickup bezzels were recessed into the blade-shaped body, which I think you can sort-of see when he holds that bend at the 2:50 mark.
I figured so. The bluegrass/hillbilly music has been popular with "heads" for decades.
There’s a whole Deadhead side of my family and my aunt and cousins put on a regional bluegrass festival in their town—Billy Strings has played it a couple times. (I actually won my Martin at a fundraising raffle at the fest.) There seems to be an endless number of jamgrass bands to play at this festival. I think there’s some kind of federal program to reform String Cheese Incident wannabes into cosmic hillbilly types.
My wife is a bit of a country music purist who likes her bluegrass as God and Bill Monroe intended, so it’s an enjoyable day of running musical critique when we go.
Here are a couple you might not expect me to post...
And a couple you would probably expect from me... but I listen to these on a regular basis....
