California Burning again

So the Station 2 fire in Azusa near me is now 80 something % contained. It was started by a homeless man in his 30s living on the riverbed.

I had just ridden my bike up the riverbed a week before the fire was started and noticed all the homeless encampments along the River. Here’s a picture I snapped of the river further up the mountain from the encampments. The riverbed (not in the picture) is huge and mostly has no water, all rocks, tundra, and bushes from the wide area the river has traveled and shifted over decades (and centuries probably). When I rode by I did think to myself that some homeless person is going to start a fire one of these days. Of course I was thinking accidentally and not on purpose.

Hi all, just checking in. It's been quite a week and a half so far. We are safe in an evac center. Looks like the house survived, but the fire was within 100 yards or less. Evac orders are lifting for some areas, but we are likely here for at least a few more days as they restore power and water to the areas that can re populate. Some houses in our particular zone did burn, complicating matters. Plenty of stories to tell when I have the energy, but pretty drained at this point. We spent a couple days and nights moving around, sleeping in parking lots until we c=got in the evac center. The people here have been nothing short of wonderful.

Looking forward to getting back to work and shooting the shit here, but that may be a while as well. Internet has been spotty at best, and I used that precious time to track fire maps and communicate with our son in Or.

Thanks for the concern from you guys. We were pretty sure we lost the house a couple of times, so it has been tough. Didn't know about Roaring camp, that hurts. As does Big Basin.

Cant wait to get back in the house and start cleaning. my pressure washer is going to get quite a workout.

So glad to hear you are ok 335. An old friend of mine is also in BC and they look to be ok as well. Stay safe and glad your house made it. It's going to be a long road to recovery for the area but hopefully there will be lots of help

Hmmm, I'm not certain that this pic is legit. I just drove by Roaring Camp and it appears untouched along with everything in that area. We have heard so many rumors about places that supposedly burned that are now magically standing. It kind of pisses me off, as we got at least one gut punch along the way that turned out to be a fakebook rumor.

AFAIK Roaring camp was ok. I only found that out a couple of days ago. The picture apparently is legit but I'm not sure if they are part of the Roaring Camp trains and just stored elsewhere. I found another article that said they are the Swanton Pacific Railroad and are owned by Cal Poly so maybe a different bunch of trains.

And here I thought if I found it on the interwebz it had to be right

Swanton makes sense, they got hit pretty hard if reports are accurate.

Our local San Gabriel mountains are on fire again. I received an evacuation notice on my iPhone last night for 3 neighboring foothills cities. I’m a safe distance from the foothills so no chance of that for my area.

The smoke has formed a complete overcast sky today, but it must be out as it’s all white/grey and not black.

Extreme heat, unhealthy air, and Covid restrictions make for a depressing atmosphere.

The sky is very orange here and we aren't close to any of the fires. Plus there is ash everywhere.

The Valley fire has painted the sky's orange in San Diego. They are worried about the Santa Ana's kicking up again further fanning the flames. It is too far away from me to have a direct impact, but some of my co-workers live out that way, and homes have been burnt down.

I can't believe that the fire in San Bernardino was started by a gender reveal gone wrong. Those color cannons should be illegal here. It's too dry here for that shit.

I'm sick of smoke. When we evacuated, visibility around my house was ~200ft. Been breathing this shit for weeks. For the first 2 days it was raining ash, chunks, and leaves from trees we don't have around here (they were coming from the drier areas up in Bonny Doon that has a lot of Oak and Madrone) which was kind of eeerie. Thats like 15 miles away.

This was day 1 as viewed from Davenport. Bonny Doon had no chance.

Just found out that the camp my wife went to for most of her childhood is likely gone as of today. The camp is on Huntington Lake and according to the fire maps that is where that fire is right now.

I haven't seen the sun all day here. The air isn't bad because the smoke is above 2000' so I went riding staying below 1000' (I like a margin of error). But the streetlights were on at 11 am That picture is pretty cool and it does look a lot like just before a total eclipse today
