Not really a surprise but 2020 keeps on giving :eek: Lightning started a lot of fires (over 300). Several large fire complexes locally. People are being evacuated within 10 miles of me but I doubt that it will get closer than that. Still I think @335clone might be in or near the evacuation zone in Santa Cruz County. Air quality here is terrible, very unhealthy so no riding today, no working outside and no opening the windows to let a cool breeze in. It's also been hot for a week and was just supposed to start cooling off today

Probably going to be bad air for a few days, and another round of lightning is possible apparently next week...
 
Just read that a firefighting helicopter crashed near Coalinga starting another fire. Hope no one was hurt but helicopters crashing usually isn't good for the occupants..

Hope everything works out. My buddy up in Boulder Creek had to evacuate pretty quickly.
 
Colorado, too. Yesterday the governor imposed a 30 day open fire ban for the whole state.
 
I have a friend in Grass Valley. He called the other night to say the fire was closing in on his house and they were evacuating everyone in his neighborhood. He has a 55 Chevy and a 40 Ford in his garage and all his band's equipment in his house. He grabbed three guitars and his pets and left. I haven't heard anything from him since last night. I know the cars and guitars are just material things, but they are all part of what he worked so hard for. I'd hate to see him lose them.
 
The Pine Gulch fire in western Colorado is now the second largest in state history and is only 7% contained. We have a lot of smoke all the way down in Colorado Springs from that fire. It's bad.....

When was that? Most of today I couldn't see any blue sky or the sun. The times I could see the sun I could look at it without being blinded and it was red which isn't usually a good thing at noon :P
 
I wrote a song called California's Burning which repeated the line "Happens every year" in the refrain over and over. This was in 1985.
 
Mojo to the brothers up north.

In the south we have been dealing with it as well. Air Quality blows and with the high sitting above, not great for breathing and all.

Much Kudos and mojo to our Firefighters.

4pm. We're really close to the bay, so we tend to get competing upper-level winds and managed to actually see some blue sky for an hour or so yesterday.
 
Better today for air quality. But I can see the smoke behind us in the mountains and that fire is at 40000+ acres with 0% containment. The smoke is so thick over the fires they can't fly helicopters to drop water. Lots of folks have been evacuated. The 1st responders as usually are making a superhuman effort to try and safe property. Apparently the observatory on Mt Hamilton is threatened. It is an historic (circa 1888 building). But Cali's oldest state park, Big Basin, with some old growth redwoods was not spared as well as other historic buildings in the park. Redwood bark is flame resistant but it is an incredible intense fire too :(
