+1 for Inkscape. It's great. PLUS it has great built-in tutorials. Just click on the "Help" tab at the top, then select "Tutorials".

That worked with Apple but hasn't with other companies. And now I think some software companies require either a student ID or teaching credential.

I am not sure if it works like this everywhere, but when I worked for a university, pretty much anyone could walk into the bookstore and purchase software and it is at the education price, they didn't make you show some kind of ID.

Get one of your college age students/teachers to buy a copy from the University bookstore at the ridiculously low price.
