In my 20 years of buying and selling, I've never had this happen(nor have a I done this to someone).

I got a guitar today(shipped from New Hampshire to NJ) from a seller off of a Facebook group. I'm travelling for work and I got a text from my wife that said:

"Sooooooo.... did you know this guy was going to ship without a box?"

What?!?!?! she then sent me this pic

Who the hell ships a guitar without a box?!?!?!?! The seller used plastic zip ties to keep the case shut, but damn... I'm worried as hell. I don't get home until tomorrow... I'm hoping that the guitar itself is ok.

Hopefully, I'll be posting a HNGD thread tomorrow!!!

Just curious, what would expect a thin layer of cardboard to add to this situation? Because had he used a box, that's probably all it would have been, nothing more.

Plus maybe it's safe sending it just in a case that has a handle built in than a box a lazy delivery man has to bear hug.

Just saying... Don't freak out till you open it.

I agree with Doug. The throwers in the processing centers might actually notice something in a big special case and pay attention. They don’t give two shits about anything in a plain cardboard box.

true... i guess that makes sense. i was just shocked. i couldn't imagine shipping a guitar without a box(or two)

I shipped a guitar to loan out a friend once in its case. Back in the early 90s via UPS.
It came thru fine. It was a Carvin in a Carvin HS case, secured with duct tape.
Came thru fine.

Got one once packed in a gig bag wrapped in about 6 layers of bubble wrap with the label taped to the bubble wrap.

He's actually shipped it in a specialist box designed specifically to protect guitars. They call them "cases".

Of course if he's promised the case is in perfect condition as well, then that should have been wrapped somehow.

One of my Les Paul's was shipped to me in just a case wrapped in duct tape to keep it closed. It was also one of the cheapest cases I'd ever seen (with the exception of chipboard, etc.). It made it to me undamaged.

Yeah, sorry but I'm in the "it probably arrived safer and got treated better in transit because it wasn't in a cardboard box" camp.

Sure, it's unusual. Maybe even lazy/cheap on the seller's part, but as Doug pointed out, a flimsy cardboard box wouldn't have added any real protection

The box won't add much protection but if it's packed properly with bubble wrap or even those ungodly annoying packing peanuts that stick to every damn thing in a 10 mile radius...............then, it would/should help against rough handling, dropping, etc. You'd think it would help insulate it a little for temperature/moisture changes, etc. That's just plain laziness there. If it was a good idea, then why don't guitar manufacturers ship guitars w/o a box. I can't imagine the shipping company would even consider paying out insurance if it was damaged by them.

Inversely, all the cheap stuff from china comes sans case in just a box. Actually come to think of it, most of the epiphone / squire stuff does too.

Again, just playing devils advocate. It's very likely the guitar is just fine.
