The Official Jack's Place 2017 NHL Thread!

Yes, I am currently on the midnight to 8 am shift (we call it shift one) and I want to get back on the 4 pm to midnight shift (we call that shift 3).

Nashville wins and Pittsburgh gets greasey. I know it is somewhat common but even Fat Phil handing out cross checks. Crosby handing out grease and Malkin too.

I would absolutely love for Nashville to keep going like this. Rinne played like he had to and that was the difference.

Fatty Kessel getting in the way of Kunitz to let Nashville score was a highlight.

I have thought that Nashie has outplayed Pitts in every game so far - the hockey analysts seem to agree but yeah, here it is all tied up.

Go Nashville!!!

Could someone please explain pulling the goalie with 3 minutes left, then putting him back in after the opponent scores easily?

FFS

I get the idea to make a last ditch effort by adding another offensive player say if you are down by one with a minute left, but all the Pens did was dig a deeper hole. Ok, so it failed and they scored. Why not continue without a goalie then, and at least try to make up a point or 2 with the one man advantage since you made the decision. You already fucked yourself, so at least run with it.

Depends on where the next face-off is, and who is taking it.

If you have the opponents top face-off guy out there, you need to be very careful about leaving the goal unattended.

However, if the faceoff (assuming they didn't score) is in the other team's end, it may behoove you leave the goalie out and opt for another attacker.

They were down 2 already. It's pretty much desperation time. Typically you want to pull the goalie with a minute and a half or so left if you are down by one so double it if you are down by 2. The point is to get the puck and maintain pressure so you can score one fairly quickly. Losing by 2 or 3 makes no difference. It's a gamble and one that rarely pays off but does occasionally and that's why it's done.

But why put him back in, once they were down by 3. Once you pulled that trigger, it's do or die. Why not keep 6 skaters on the ice to increase the pressure? How many times in these playoffs have we seen 2 goals in a minute or less? A few at least. You already lost unless you score 3, so keep the presure on the other goalie and you might just get them. Putting your goalie back in just seems to cement your loss.

Well it doesn't matter. So as to why put him back in, the game is over, why have 2 or 3 more unnecessary faceoffs or push for another goal and risk an injury. It would be possibly different if it was game 7 but it wasn't so why add risk for no gain. 2 goals in a minute, sure, 3 goals, that's pushing it and don't forget that the 2 quick goals are rarely at the end of the game when teams are completely focused on defense but rather often when they are thinking offense.

Yeah, that was an awful game.

The Predators looked hapless - couldn't make simple plays. Some world-class bad goaltending. Abysmal.

Crosby played well, and also continued to humiliate himself ala Alex Rodriguez with his bush league bullshit. Throw in some gratuitous late-70's style home cooking ref botch job by Wes McCauley and it was just a negative experience.

Really, more of this and I'll be watching the NHL like I do the NBA, and that is: not much.

Why in the WORLD is the schedule the way it is?

I always thought it went game-off-game-off-game-off-game-off-game-off-game-game.

Meaning ONE day off in between games, except for 6 and 7, which are back-to-back.

The schedule sucks. Many times, back in the day, the Cup was already handed out before June. June isn't what hockey should be about.

F I hate the Pens.

Yeah, I remember when the Bruins won in 2011, it just felt weird -- it was like "hockey ought to be over by now."

I realize that pro sports altering schedules amounts to a self-inflicted downsizing (for most), but I'm really hoping the NHL doesn't over-cook itself. I have zero faith in Bettman and the quick cash-out culture makes me worry that they're going to follow the NBA's footsteps of "sports as entertainment!"

Stanley Cup Finals ought to resolve around Mem Day.

Edit: Have a funny (icky) feeling, but anyone got any predictions for tonight? I'll suggest 4-3 Preds, but suspect the Penguins might put it away.

Wish I could tell you.
The Pens are resilient.
Thre Preds are desperate.

Guess we'll see who shows up.

I have already stated the reasons repeatedly so I won't go over them again but it's extremely disappointing that Pittsburgh won again.

Now, perhaps the NHL can get on with making the goalie equipment smaller again but that doesn't seem to be on the radar as of late so I don't that it will happen.
