the "I don't get it" thread

It also allows the cop, who is sitting 20 feet after the sign, to write easy tickets.

See, that would make far more sense to me. Hell, even if it was an automated revenue generating scheme that just mailed tickets to your house... I'd get that. That would make sense to me.

As it stands I'm in control of a two-ton (well, in the Miata's case it's closer to one ton) hunk of metal hurtling down the road. I can choose to drive responsibly or I can choose to drive like an asshole. Having the local DOT spend thousands of dollars to give me data that's readily and immediately available to me isn't going to change that.

For me...... Beyonce'.

I don't find any of her songs that enjoyable to listen to. She has a quality voice based on songs recorded with Destiny's Child, but in her solo songs, she's either shouty or doing vocal gymnasics runs. ugh.

But then people say "she's such a good dancer..." Kinda reminds me of a short-circuited sex robot. shakes and convulses.. then squats and marches. Just.... weird.
Her dancing reminds me of Elaine from Seinfeld...jerky and not graceful at all. I always thought she was a good looking woman though, and agree that she has a quality voice, but overdoes the runs like so many in that genre do. So overall, I'm not much of a fan either. Plus, she's got that whole "I'm amazing"/diva thing going on, which I don't care for either.

As far as the OP goes, I'm onboard with the "I don't get it".

Studies on the effectiveness of those signs show that they actually do raise awareness in most people. People can of course still choose to drive like an asshole, but the majority of people don't make that choice when they get a gentle reminder (via the sign).

Well, they have to spend the money they're allotted somehow. If they don't spend it, they don't get it next year. And actually fixing the roads is just too much work. So here we are.

Didn't get it when they came out, still don't get it now. I've listened to each of their albums and just don't find it interesting.

that surprises me seeing as I often hear Wilco referred as the American Radiohead. Although my wife hates Wilco and Radiohead is probably her favorite band.

I don't get that either.

I like Wilco sometimes, but I don't feel that they're as musically literate or as forward-seeking.

It's a function of rock critic groupthink post-YHF and circa A Ghost Is Born when Wilco was kinda interesting and anyone kinda interesting had to be the Radiohead of something. Probably had a lot to do with the fact that the audiences for both bands overlapped a ton.

I think Jay was. Nels too. And it's certainly a credit to Jeff for bringing them into the band and exploiting their talents. But he's really just the other alt-country songwriter with a weak voice from a seminal band, who stumbled into fame because of record label stupidity.

Well YHF was his 4th album with Wilco and 8th counting Uncle Tupelo. So I think he was already on his way before the record company stupidity. I think Jeff is more forward thinking than you give him credit for. A Ghost is Born was without Jay or Nels and is probably his best record, it is my favorite.

I'll go first.

What is the real deal with this record?

I was at Boston Ballet last night with Mrs F and the last piece was set to Bitches Brew.

I don't get it...I was not thrilled to see what the music would be, but I approached it with an open mind. Knowing I would be in a seat and could not leave, I'd have a chance to listen to it all the way through and revisit it.

Didn't work. To me, it's still unlistenable. Nothing to latch on to. A lot of noise and atonal bleating set to a random rhythm that only sporadically approached a groove.

What am I missing?

clearly, you're not hip enough to get it.

A Ghost is Born sounds like bad YHF leftovers. Yes, he was three albums in at the point of YHF. But it would have been just another poor seller from an alt-country band without the Warner silliness. That silliness propelled them from playing theaters to playing Madison Square Garden.

What's not to get? It's a global market and you don't need to understand English to enjoy watching CGI Iron Person punch robots in the face.

They were definite critical darlings with Summerteeth and the project where they were Billy Bragg's backing band. And they were playing the largest theaters in Chicago before the label thing. And they're still playing large theaters afterwards. Their ceiling is "festival headliner," just like the Flaming Lips who continue to get away with murder because Warner can't bear to lose them/look dumb after the Wilco kerfuffle.

or I'm beyond hip, and have the testicular fortitude to proclaim "the emperor has no clothes!". food for thought.

tell me, in your own words, why it is so 'good'? should I like it because I am supposed to?
