Recommend something on netflix...

Here's one not to watch: Marcella. This show is addictive. Great acting and directing. The plot starts out as a simple crime, but starts adding layers and starts interweaving many various various bits into the plot. It really keeps you guessing WTF is going on. Great fun to watch.

The problem is that half of the interweaved plot points just get dropped. No explanation, no follow up. Just a big "fuck you" from the writers. Very unsatisfactory.

Its on Hulu, but we are thoroughly enjoying DCI Banks. They have all 6 seasons streaming - 6 episodes per season (except season 1 has 8).

I hung in there right up through halfway of the most recent season and then I finally bailed. In addition to your criticisms I think I realized that all of the characters are wholly unlikable and it's impossible for me to stay invested. I just don't care enough to stick it out.

I tend to try a lot of subtitled foreign series because it allows me to noodle around on the guitar and watch a show simultaneously. The Forest (French series) isn't life-changing but it's worth a look. Shetland is ostensibly in English but there are some hardcore accents that are occasionally tough to understand. In any case it's not a bad show either.

You realize you can put on subtitles (closed caption) for pretty much any English-language series as well?

Yeah, we ended up doing that for Peaky Blinders. Between Cillian Murphy's mumbling and Paul Anderson's drunken accent, we kept having to rewind so we threw on the subtitles. The best is when music starts, it will say something like haunting melody.
