A friend of ours passed away last night, and my wife and I happened to be driving past his property and saw the ambulance and police at his house.
Larry had a large piece of property that used to be farmland and had this great big old barn on his property. What started as a family reunion years ago, over time turned into an outdoor event we called "Brainardfest" (Larry's last name) Friends would bring their campers and tents, and there was a music stage built into the side of the barn. A half dozen or so local bands and other musicians as well as a few hundred of their closest, drunken friends would play music and drink all day, all night, and the next day.
There hadn't been a festival the past two or three years because Larry and his wife separated and then Larry found out he had throat cancer.
My wife and I were out of town all weekend, and were picking our dog up from the kennel... we took a back county road home from the kennel and it happened to go through an intersection by Larry's house. I said to my wife "Look at all the police cars at Larry's house... oh geeze.. there's an ambulance too." I called one of my buddies and he got back to me with the news.
R.I.P. Uncle Lar. We'll drink some cold ones in your memory.
