Damn. I just watched Obama's farewell speech. I can not believe we went from him to Trump. It really disturbs me. We went from a man of character who speaks of inclusion and making the country better to a man who makes fun of disabled people and starts debates on if he said "big league" or "bigly"
Yeah, I was too winded to post about it last night and too busy working earlier, but I had the same thoughts.
I was literally crying (not bawling, but many tears running down my face) listening to what I believe to be a sincere man that tried his best to do good for as many people as possible talk about what we need to do going forward. Yes, he's very prepared and reading from teleprompters, but to the best of my ability I've never seen any artifice in his speeches. He's prepared in a effort to make sure people understand what he's saying and what he means.
But now we go to the opposite. A man that is clearly nowhere near the intellect or empathetic-ness of President Obama.
No, Barry wasn't perfect, but he never tried to get ahead via denigration, exclusion, fear, or other pathetic devices.
He lead and, in near futility, attempted to progress our laws to move our nation forward.
He helped repair broken bridges and built many new ones relative to our international relationships.
He fostered a sense of service, not as an obligation, but an opportunity to be a part of advancing our nation, our country, our people, NOT our personal interests or beliefs.
In just about 10 days we go to man and a party that is focused primarily on undoing President Obama's work as opposed to presenting any ideas that will help this country continue to move forward. Away from acceptance and inclusion to division and exclusion. From seeing the big picture and how to be as open and useful to as many people as possible to a myopic notion of the U.S. against them...except for Russia and Taiwan (so far?). A party and it's most fervent constituents that are putting their faith (practiced so fucking hypocritically) and gut feelings and desire to be right about them above any notion of compassion for at least half of their fellow Americans. People that defend Putin by proxy (if not directly) while condemning neighbors that don't have the "right" heritage, faith, complexion, education (or lack thereof), etc. to be worthy of citizenship in their "bubble". People that defend their hatred and bigotry, by increasing the parameters of said bigotry. This far from all of the folks that voted for Trump, but it's enough of them to leave me numb.
All the best to everyone, regardless of where you stand or who you voted for. I doubt that many people here are in a worse place than they were eight years ago. For the unfortunate that are, I further doubt that it is in anyway related to President Obama. You have my thoughts and hopes for a swift upturn in your prospects for you, your families, your friends, your communities, etc. That is not to say that those that are in a "better" position than they were eight years ago necessarily have President Obama to thank for their prosperity. However, many do have the progressive "liberal" thinking to thank for having better access to:
-- respect for who they are and how they live,
-- healthcare for their families
-- joining the great melting pot of U.S. citizenry
-- and so much more, not the least of which are...
dreams that they
can do or accomplish anything.
This isn't intended to start another pissing match. I know plenty of folks here and elsewhere think that progressive and liberal legislation and those that support it are minions of impending destruction of our nation and only the righteous can save us. That's fine, but the man that "won" the election is not righteous. His history is practically an open book and it bears this out. It's not conservatives/Republicans, be they politicians or private citizens that are the issue. It's is the president elect. We deserve so much better and last night we saw once again, and for the last time, what that looks like.
