OMG Politics, I'm over it already.

"It has been half a century since the Democratic Party lost much of the Southern white vote, after the Johnson administration pushed the Civil Rights Act through Congress. John E. Roemer, a professor of economics and political science at Yale, notes that to this day “the white Southern vote is the reason that the Republican Party remains a player in U.S. national politics.”

The racial divide remains the main obstacle to building a robust American state — entangling the debate over taxes and spending in a zero-sum calculation over “us” versus “them.”

It would be nice to start to put this behind us. I am not sure, but it may be that the only thing that will will be time, and the changing demographics of the country.

Please understand I do not mean this last as any attach on any race, faith, or belief. It is meant more as a study of change. To me, it would be just as wrong to marginalize or be prejudiced to those of faith. One's faith is protected in the Constitution after all. But it would appear that the traditional power structure is changing over time. Which stands to reason.

I don' think anyone here would think of it as an attack. Honestly, I'm fully behind it if they also represent the last vestiges of widespread racism. Sadly I don't think the general prejudice sentiment is going away anytime soon. They may choose to not identify as Christian, but the hate is strong. Even sadder are the minorities that support Trump...people of color that are just a prejudice against other races, religions, and have xenophobic tendencies. There are still some big issues within the Africa American and Latino communities regarding homosexuality, particularly as it relates Christian upbringing.

Basically I think it's been long enough for the historical racism of the south toe truly be history, but it's still alive and well. People will always find a reason to hate and segregate others and themselves...or buy into some demagogue's appeal to a group that might get them elected. Most upsetting is how few of these demagogues actually believe the hate they are are trying to parlay into an elected position. It's about obtaining and maintaining power at any cost.

Lastly, I find the hatred that so many Christians have aligned themselves with over the past few decades to speak to their lack of Christianity or true understanding of their religion. Christ never preached the hatred and intolerance that so many of his followers live by. So many Christians live by their own twisted idea of what Christ stood for and not what the bible tells them. Stupidity seems inextricably tied to a significant amount of "faithful" people.

As John Oliver reminded folks recently, the saying is "a few bad apples spoil the bunch". So the bad apples are bringing down the rest of the group...they fuck up the bell curve for objective observers. They're to be trashed, not embraced and something for which endless excuses should be made.

I'm mostly saddened by how many Republicans have cowed to trying keep the party together behind Trump instead of making a stand and restating and repackaging their objectives without the hate and fear mongering. Too many folks trying to maintain their position and the perceived power and not enough focusing on what's best for the constituents and the country.

In and out in 10 minutes at 8am in Harris County, TX.

While I was there, some poor guy was told by the lady behind the desk that, after checking with the "home office" by phone, that he wasn't registered to vote. He seemed confused. "I don't understand how that happened. Okay, well how do I vote then?" "You don't."

Outside the perimeter, I saw a campaign sign for a woman named Sophia running for some judgeship whose campaign slogan was "Mama Mia, vote for Sophia!" That's brilliant stuff right there. /smirk

As an observer outside the US, between the "questionable" information on the news and the "highly questionable" information I've seen on Facebook I've come to the conclusion there are 2 possible outcomes from your election:

Case 1:
  • Clinton wins the election.
  • Christian Fundamentalists, the KKK, Westboro Baptist Church, Right Wing Militias, etc, all heavily armed, decide the election was rigged and rise up spawning the Second American Civil War.
  • The US gets turned into a continent wide flaming ruin.
  • Russia and China enact their takeover plans without US opposition.
  • Most of the rest of the world is now f*cked as well as the USA.

Case 2:
  • Trump wins the election.
  • Someone calls Trump a dick on Twitter.
  • Trump pushes nuclear button.
  • World War III starts.
  • Whole world is f*cked in one go.

Think I'm going to write my bucket list...

The American Right gun nut crowd talks a big game but by and large they are cowards and pussies. Of course it only takes a handful of "true patriots" for some awful incidents to occur but the vast majority of these people are all bark and no bite.

Voted! Easy peasy, except we have so many damn propositions and measures that the ballot was two pages, both sides. Took longer to fill the damn thing out than it did to wait in line.
Got my sticker, though.
