Except you are confusing registering independent (NO Political affiliation) and the American Independent Party, which is a right wing neo-fascist party. There is no national "Independent" party. Many people got misled and ended up filling the ranks of the party of George Wallace.

The difference is slight, but profound.

I would be more interested in a strong independent that spoke clearly and intelligently on the issues, and lined up with my politics, than either a green or libertarian party member. In theory. But not this election. Plus, no one like that has stepped up.

I mean not confusing anything. An Independent candidate is any candidate that is not running as a Democrat or Republican. Sanders was an Independent for most of his career.
 
His people should have never agreed to a debate. He looks like an idiot, and his demeanor makes the evil ice queen look friendly and positive.
