Official Star Wars: Rogue One thread

I prefer power as the primary motivator, with love interest/jealousy/possession of women as a sign of said power being secondary.

The details of the motivation *thing* matters less than the character stuff and the internal motivations.

Star Wars is King Arthur in space. In these types of romances, the personal and the political are intertwined. For example, Mordred wanted Arthur's power, his favor, his kingdom, and his bride.

I think it would have been interesting to show how Obi Wan was miscast as a Jedi knight. He's a wizard, not a warrior. The sort of slippery intellectual trickster who can justify a lie with claiming it's "from a certain point of view." A young Obi Wan might have been roguish, too clever by half...more of an Odyssesus who used his brains to get himself out of jams that his mouth got him into. A talented but morally rigid star quarterback like Anakin might have been put off by his mentor always getting away with shit by following the spirit of the Jedi code but not the letter of the law. As Anakin got better than Obi Wan at Jedi-ing...Anakin may have become a buzzkill for Obi Wan and Obi Wan may have become jealous of his success and then used his seniority or smarts to keep Anakin from getting ahead in some way that turns a good natured rivalry into a rift.

Power, personality, love can all be commingled into something toxic...leading to Obi Wan's Pyrrhic victory over Vader and then slinking off to Avalon/Tatooine to think about what a bad Jedi he had been. Because Merlin would make a terrible Arthur.

Also, if the Clone Wars were like the Trojan war...something far away that everyone good at stuff had to go do for decades...then the Emperor/Empire can just be a false/sick/usurper king that happens while everyone is away earning their hero merit badge. NO BORING SHIT ABOUT SPACE TRADE AND THE RISE OF SPACE MUSSOLINI. The heroes go away and are tested...the bond between the heroes is broken...the best Jedi in the whole damn universe is corrupted...and everyone comes home to find that Monster Mash has moved into the castle and is calling the shots. There's a plague upon the land...etc.

All of which are OBVIOUS STORY BEATS if Lucas knew as much about myth and narrative tropes as he pretended to.

Won't someone please think of the midi-chlorians?!?!?!

Uwe Boll could have written a better script than Lucas.

Also, if the fucking war had real fuckinh stakes then it makes sense that the Jedi might be desperate and willing to take a flyer on a talented dude with some pretty obvious red flags because...hey we gotta beat the Clones/space baddies/robot death squads/space rednecks.

I wonder how much marketing pressure Lucas and his studio were under for the prequels, especially for the first one (an untested commodity). Cheesy narrative aside a lot of stuff in the prequels seems like it's there purely to sell product.

I've seen Rogue One twice now, and completely love it. Will buy the DVD immediately upon release.

In the vein of those ranking their favorites, here's my list, in order:

1. Star Wars (I refuse to call it A New Hope, to me when it was released it was just Star Wars, and was the most magical experience of my 9-year-old life)
2. Empire (Better quality film than the first, but I was older and it was less magical, so it gets second place even if it's technically better)
3. Rogue One
4. The Force Awakens
5. Return of the Jedi
6. Revenge of the Sith
7. Attack of the Clones
8. Phantom Menace

I pretty much agree with this, though I was 14.

The only thing that bugs me about the new films is how darkly they are lit in the beginning. But that is also probably because my eyes pick up the detail in the dark scenes less well than they once did.

Interesting thoughts by @Peen Simmons on the Arthurian aspects. I had not really looked at the stories in that light completely. I don't think we are far apart, if at all, in our thoughts. It is more a matter of emphasis (power vs. love/romance aspects), and power corrupting love more into jealousy and possession rather than true love that will let go of the one they love to save them, etc. But again, I think that could work in what Peen is suggesting too. Interesting about the Merlin idea for Obi Wan. I was more previously focused on his sacrifice at the hands of Vader on the path to rising above him through the force. Not sure how I feel about the Merlin, mental trickster idea.

Part I: A humorless, tightly wound Anakin is driven insane by Obi Wan's unapologetic appreciation for Christopher Cross. He starts lashing out and exhibiting odd behaviors.

Part II: Obi Wan recommends that Anakin get another dog. The dog takes up all his time and robs him of sleep. Anakin, losing his grip, kills a cat one night. The village blames the beloved cat's death on Obi Wan's sorcery and he flees.

Part III: Anakin and an army of twisted cat haters have rid the universe of cats, and with them their protectors, the Jedi. No one is the wiser, as blame is easily placed on the berobed weirdos. Obi Wan realizes he must come out of exile to save two remaining cats, who he disguised as humans in order to assure their survival, so they live to reestablish the Jedi order and defeat the empire. Meanwhile, Anakin's dog eats half of his body.

Took my son and my young stepson and his wife to see Rogue One last night (in the Dolby Digital @ AMC Prime theater) and we were all very happy with it.

My list would pretty much echo yours.

I'll probably get my thoughts on it in order and post them here.

I just got back from seeing this movie with my 12 year old son and his friend.. I was very dark at the beginning. That is one of the reasons I kept dozing off. Well that, and the fact that I didn't care about any of the characters. I got the gist of the story despite falling asleep several times then going off the watch parts of other movies in the theater complex.

The kids loved it. They thought it was great. They are huge Star Wars fans. All thumbs up from them.
I give it 3 out of 4 yawns as I couldn't keep my eyes open. I've seen every movie in the series and this was above average from what I saw and remember.

Liked it very much-- right up there with the initial 1970s trilogy. My wife was thrilled to see -- finally -- female pilots.

I finally saw it, and I really enjoyed it. It is what should have been episode 3, given the original concept of Star Wars being part of a Saturday serial. I will have to see it again.
